Seurat, Signac, Van Gogh at ALBERTINA

Seurat, Signac, Van Gogh at the ALBERTINA, organised in cooperation with the Kröller-Müller Museum, tells the success story of pointillism from its creation in 1886 to its effects on the early 1930s. This presentation completes the story of Modern Art with the significant chapter of Pointillism as its midwife in 100 selected paintings, watercolours, and drawings. The exhibition draws an arc from Paul Signac’s and Henri-Edmond Cross’s transformation of the points into small squares and mosaics all the way to the masterpieces of Vincent Van Gogh, the vibrant colours of the Fauves, the decoratively placed dots in the cubist works of Pablo Picasso, and the abstract works of Piet Mondrian. Sep 16th, 2016 - Jan 8th, 2017.

16.09.2016-08.01.2017.

Thea Djordjadze and Yto Barrada at SECESSION

For her installation To be in an upright position on the feet (studio visit) at the main hall of the SECESSION, Thea Djordjadze has relocated her studio to Vienna. Literally everything that was not nailed down was dismantled, removed from shelves, stacked in moving cartons, sheathed in bubble wrap, piled up on palettes, loaded onto the truck. A radical decision, since it leaves her studio in Berlin completely empty, at least for the time being. All the things the artists needs for her work—or even more basically, in her everyday life—are temporarily out of reach. But does not such an evacuation, the creation of a tabula rasa, also embrace the possibility of a liberation, a new (or regained) freedom?
Yto Barrada’s exhibition The Sample Book presents a new body of work that builds on the artist’s recent major cycle Faux Guide and her study of fossils in Morocco. The Sample Book is a constellation of numerous works that function independently of each other while also being integral parts of a larger ensemble. The pieces are so heterogeneous that the connections between them are not readily apparent, but they are tied together by a system of subtle correspondences on the level of content. Their stories become more complex the more intricately the artist intertwines or interweaves the individual elements; more properly speaking, they tell multiple—true as well as fictional—stories. Sep 8th to Nov 1st, 2016.

8. September – 1. November 2016.

Martin Kippenberger at Bank Austria KUNSTFORUM Wien

The Martin Kippenberger (born 1953 in Dortmund, died 1997 in Vienna) exhibition of the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien is devoted to the medium of “language”, which Kippenberger favoured throughout his oeuvre. His manic work tempo, the habit of integrating “everything and everyone” into his artistic work, also a unique ability to get scent of the contradictions in the zeitgeist, break ground primarily through language – on the level of the picture title, as text in picture, the pun and the bad joke, misunderstanding, the slogan, as rhyme or also in the form of artists’ books, stickers and posters. The exhibition is being produced in close cooperation with the Estate of Martin Kippenberger, Galerie Gisela Capitain/Cologne. Curator: Lisa Ortner-Kreil. Sep 8th to Nov 27th, 2016.

Kuratorin: Lisa Ortner-Kreil. 08.09. - 27.11.2016.

Das Gestische/The Gestural at 21er Haus

The exhibition Das Gestische/The Gestural at 21er Raum tries to find answers to these questions of individual authorship, and artistic authenticity, especially within a contemporary context and also observes how the reception of the painterly gesture evolved during the ages of mechanical reproduction and medialisation. Sep 8th to Nov 20th, 2016.

08. September 2016 bis 20. November 2016.
