Július Koller at mumok

Július Koller – One Man Anti Show at the mumok documents the artists independent contribution to the neo-avantgarde. Július Koller (1939–2007) is one of the most important Eastern European artists working since the 1960s, whose art had and has considerable international significance. Koller‘s work developed in critical distance to the communist authorities and their official art, and it also questioned traditions in modernism and the conventions of the Western art business. Curated by Daniel Grúň, Kathrin Rhomberg, and Georg Schöllhammer, Exhibition architecture by Hermann Czech. Nov 25th, 2016 to April 17th, 2017.

Francis Alÿs and Avery Singer at SECESSION

At the main hall of the SECESSION Francis Alÿs shows Le temps du sommeil, a series of 111 small paintings created over the course of two decades. They depict miniature scenes and often look like snapshots of simple gestures and activities that, upon closer inspection, appear to be fairly absurd. The pictures illustrate all that he cannot speak of and the titles of the works are not intended as annotations to the images; they enter into a dialogue with them, shining a light on the complex interrelationship between visual and verbal communication. Le temps du sommeil is shown together with the films Paradox of Praxis 1 (Sometimes Making Something Leads to Nothing) (1997) and Paradox of Praxis 5, Ciudad Juárez, México (Sometimes we dream as we live and we live as we dream) (2013), which trace an arc from his early oeuvre to his most recent video work. In the basement the SECESSION presents the work Avery Singer. In Sailor the artist displays a series of new pictures in large formats of projected surfaces, screens within the picture, and shadows that take on a life of their own or sprawl over the bodies and objects like nets. The resulting novel pictorial spaces are characterized by an irritating interplay between the illusionistic depth of the painted volumes, the various planes of which the pictures are composed, and the flatness of the meticulously finished surfaces. Singer employs a computer-controlled large-scale industrial airbrush printer, which not only allows her to generate details and surfaces that could not be manufactured by hand, it also lets her confront painting with its own history by dismantling the ostensible opposition between the digital world and painting.

Im Grafischen Kabinett werden zwei seiner Filme Paradox of Praxis 1 (Sometimes Making Something Leads to Nothing),1997 und Paradox of Praxis 5, Ciudad Juárez, México (Sometimes we dream as we live and we live as we dream), 2013 gezeigt. 18.11.2016 – 22.01.2017.

The Poetics of the Material at LEOPLD MUSEUM

What the works assembled in the exhibition "The Poetics of the Material" at LEOPOLD MUSEUM have in common is the utilization of found objects, everyday items and “non-art” materials, which are called into question as bearers of cultural meanings. Incorporated into the structure of these artworks, primarily sculptures and installations, the aesthetics and historical significance of these objects and materials are revealed as well as their semantic content is analyzed – and this often in terms of a playful interaction of material and language.

Artists: Benjamin Hirte, Sonia Leimer, Christian Kosmas Mayer, Mathias Pöschl, Anne Schneider, Misha Stroj und Michael Hammerschmid. Curated by Stephanie Damianitsch

21.10.2016 – 30.01.2017
