“That’s me – That’s not me” Cindy Sherman at SAMMLUNG VERBUND

sammlung VERBUND shows the widely unknown early works by Cindy Sherman under the title “That’s me – That’s not me” and presents a “catalogue raisonné” compiled by Gabriele Schor in close collaboration with the artist. Early series of photographies, where Sherman already played numerous roles, were cut out by her and put together to complex stories like "Bus Riders" and "Murder Mystery People" or turned into animation films. Until May 16, 2012.

MoMA opens with a Cindy Sherman retrospective on Feb 26, 2012.

Die sammlung VERBUND zeigt frühe Arbeiten (1975-1977) von Cindy Sherman. Schon bevor sie für ihre "Film Stills" berühmt wurde fotografierte sie sich in den unterschiedlichsten Rollen, z.B. in den Cutout Serie "Bus Riders", "Doll Clothes" oder "Murder Mystery". Die ausgeschnittenen Figuren setzte sie zu teilweise komplexen Storyboards zusammen oder verwendete sie für Animationsfilmen. Bis 16. Mai 2012.

Das teilweise unbekannte, verschollene und wenig dokumentierte Frühwerk wurde von der Leiterin der Sammlung Gabriele Schor mit der Künstlerin aufbereitet und in einem umfangreichen Katalog dokumentiert. Ab 26.02.2012 zeigt das MoMA eine umfassende Cindy Sherman Retrospektive.

Utopia GESAMTKUNSTWERK at 21er Haus

The 21er Haus opens with a contemporary view on the idea of the gesamtkunstwerk from the 1960s to very recent positions by young artists, in which the spectacular display architecture of gigantic black cubes by Esther Stocker turns the museum and the artworks on show really into a gesamtkunstwerk. Bettina Steinbrügge and Harald Krejci have chosen 54 austrian and international positions for "Utopie GESAMTKUNSTWERK", among them are Walter Pichler, Joseph Beuys, Liam Gillick, Una Szeemann, Jason Rhoades, Gelitin, Thomas Hirschhorn, Paul McCarthy, Christoph Schlingensief or Markus Schinwald. Until May 20, 2012.

Das 21er Haus eröffnet sein Ausstellungsprogramm mit einem Rückblick auf die historische Idee des Gesamtkunstwerkes. Die von Bettina Steinbrügge und Harald Krejci kuratierten Schau "Utopie GESAMTKUNSTWERK" umfasst die Zeit seit 1960 bis heute. 54 Positionen österreichischer und internationaler Künstler bis hin zu sehr jungen Künstlern, für die die Beschäftigung mit dem Gesamtkunstwerk wieder aktuell ist, sind zu sehen: Walter Pichler, Hermann Nitsch, Joseph Beuys, Liam Gillick, Una Szeemann, Jason Rhoades, Gelitin, Thomas Hirschhorn, Paul McCarthy, Christoph Schlingensief, Markus Schinwald u.a.m. Mit der Ausstellungsarchitektur aus großen schwarzen Kuben, die wie Riesenbauklötzer verstreut sind, hat Esther Stocker nicht nur eine interessante Displaylandschaft für die Exponate geschaffen sonder sich auch dem Thema Gesamtkunstwerk elegant spielerisch angenähert. Gallerist Hans Knoll together with Vasilina Verdi curated this show of contemporary russian artists "Russian Renaissance - Young Russian Art" for Hilger's BROTkunsthalle. Artists: AES+F, Vladimir Anselm, Alexander Brener & Barbara Schurz, Bulnygin, Blue Noses, Kirill Chelushkin, Sergey Chilikov, Ivan Gorshkov, Rina Grinn, Dimitry Gutov, Polina Kanis, Anastasia Khoroshilova, Oleg Kulik, Lena Lapschina, Victoria Lomasko / Anton Nikolaev, Anatoly Osmolovsky, PG Group, Victor Ribas

Der schon vor der Ostöffnung 1989 in Budapest und inzwischen seit mehr als 10 Jahren auch in Moskau tätige Wiener Galerist Hans Knoll kuratierte die Ausstellung "Russian Renaissance - Young Russian Art" zusammen mit Vasilina Verdi für die Hilger BROTkunsthalle. Sie soll einen Überblick nicht nur über aktuelle, bereits etablierte und doch provokante Positionen wie Blue Noses und einer ganz jungen Generation von russischen KünstlerInnen geben und einen Blick auf die russische Kunstszene über Moskau hinaus ermöglichen.

The Austrian Photographic Society celebrates her 150th anniversary with „Zeit-zeugen – Photographie in Österreich seit 1945“at the k/haus. Works by 120 Photographers from icons like Ernst Haas, Inge Morath and Franz Hubmann to the Aktionisten and the Wiener Gruppe up to the lates trend. Until Jan 29, 2012.

Die Photographische Gesellschaft zeigt anlässlich ihres 150-jährigen Bestehens „Zeit-zeugen – Photographie in Österreich seit 1945“ im k/haus. Neben Ikonen wie Ernst Haas, Inge Morath, Harry Weber, Franz Hubmann, Elfriede Melchjar und Heinz Simonis sind die Aktionisten der Sechziger- und Siebzigerjahre ebenso vertreten wie die Wiener Gruppe mit Valie Export. Vertreter der Photographie als künstlerisches Mittel wie Erwin Wurm, herausragende Werbephotographen bis hin zu trendweisenden, jungen und aufstrebenden Photokünstlern der Gegenwart – insgesamt 120 Positionen sind bis zum 29. Jänner 2012 im k/haus zu sehen.

The Secession presents David Maljković (HR) in the main hall. He shows only the presentational set up from earlier exhibitions, whithout the actual objects (of art).
Attila Csörgő (H) in his sculptures, photographies and drawings asks kinetik, optical or geometric questions – with surprisingly poetical outcome.
Lecia Dole-Recio (USA) puts paper, cardboard and textile together to surfaces and deconstruct them again in the painting process. Till Feb 5, 2012

Die Secession zeigt im Hauptraum David Maljković (HR), der frühere Arbeiten einer radikalen Neuinszenierung unterwirft. Von den eigentlichen (Kunst)-Objekte entleert zeigt er die für andere Ausstellungen entwickelten Präsentationsstrukturen. Das Konzept zielt darauf ab, die Arbeiten ihres Inhalts zu entleeren und nur das Set-up zu betrachten.
Attila Csörgő (H) stellt in seinen Skulpturen, Fotoarbeiten und Zeichnungen naturwissenschaftliche und technologische Fragen aus Kinetik, Optik oder Geometrie – mit oft unerwarteten, kurzweiligen und poetischen Ergebnissen.
Lecia Dole-Recio (USA) collagiert Papier, Kartonagen und Textilien zu einem Untergrund, den sie nach der malerischen Bearbeitung dekonstruiert. Bis zum 5. Feb. 2012.

Fritz Wotruba Privat Foundation at 21er Haus

Fritz Wotruba's works have found a new home in the 21er Haus. Only a few of the more then 500 sculptures belonging to the Fritz Wotruba Privat Foundation can now be rediscovered downstairs. Besides permanent and temporary exhibitions there is room for storage, archival and office facilities.

Der umfangreiche Nachlass des Bildhauers Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975) hat endlich eine neue Heimstätte im 21er Haus gefunden. Zur Zeit kann eine kleine Übersicht der mehr als 500 Skulpturen im Besitz der Fritz Wotruba Privatstiftung in den neuen Räumen in der Kelleretage wiederentdehkt werden. Neben permanenten und temporären Ausstellungen ist hier Platz für Speicher, Archiv und Büroräume.

Andreas Huber presents works by Michael Part and MOMENTUM photos "Wilder Mann" by Charles Fréger. At MUSA Hiroko Inoue from Nara, Japan, installed her large format photos "Inside Out".

The renovated all new 21er Haus opens with "Great Prospects"and interventions and installations by Lucio Fontana, Andrea Fraser, Marcus Geiger, Florian Hecker and Sasha Pirker, Oswald Oberhuber, Christian Philipp Müller, Sofie Thorsen, Franz West and museum in progress. But after beeing closed since 2001 and almost completely redeveloped by Adolf Krischanitz Austria’s Pavilion for the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels and it's architect Karl Schwanzer are the real stars. Nov 15, 2011 until Jan 8, 2012.

Nach der Schliessung 2001 und der Renovierung, die fast einem Neubau entsprach, durch Adolf Krischanitz erstrahlt der Österreichische Pavillion der Weltausstellung 1958 von Karl Schwanzer in neuem Glanz. Die erste Ausstellung "Schöne Aussichten" mit Installationen von Lucio Fontana, Andrea Fraser, Marcus Geiger, Florian Hecker und Sasha Pirker sowie Künstlerräume von Oswald Oberhuber, Christian Philipp Müller, Sofie Thorsen, Franz West und museum in progress lässt folgerichtig genug Raum um das 21er Haus neu zu erleben. Not only can you see the original famous paintings we all had as posters on our walls, but also early works, when Magritt started of as a commercial artist. Gustav Klimt / Josef Hoffmann Pioneers of Modernism at Belvedere

The Belvedere introduces the Gustav Klimt Year 2012, his 150th birthday, with the exhibition "Gustav Klimt / Josef Hoffmann Pioneers of Modernism", showing joined projects of both artists. Over two decades - from the famous Beethoven exhibition at the Vienna Secession in 1902 to the Stoclet Palace - Klimt and Hoffmann tried to bring to life their vision of an art that was meant to touch all spheres of life. Klimt was painting pictures exactly for the interiors created by Hoffmann, while Hoffmann designed tapestry and furniture to compliment Klimt's works. Curator Alfred Weidinger has reconstructed and rebuild several spaces to give the viewer a good impression of the original intensions of Klimt and Hoffmann. The cooperation with artist of the "Wiener Werkstätten" and belgian colleagues also takes up some room in the exhibition. From Oct 25, 2011 until Mar 4, 2012.

Im Vorfeld des Gustav Klimt Jahres 2012, sein 150. Geburtstag, zeigt das Belvedere in der Ausstellung "Gustav Klimt / Josef Hoffmann Pioniere der Moderne" die gemeinsamen Projekte die Klimt und Hoffmann verwirklichten. Von dem von Hoffmann geplanten und realisierten ersten Gesamtkunstwerk in Wien, der Beethoven-Ausstellung in der Secession 1902, für die Klimt den Beethovenfries schuf bis zum Palais Stoclet strebten beide nach dem Gleichklang zwischen bildender und angewandter Kunst. Auch der Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern der Wiener Werkstätten und belgischen Kollegen wird breiter Raum eingeräumt. Dass Klimt seine Bilder im Wissen um die von Hoffmann konzipierten Räume schuf und Hoffmann die Werke Klimts durch moderne Wandgestaltung und Einrichtungsgegenstände inszenierte vermittelt Kurator Alfred Weidinger durch die aufwändige Ausstellungsarchitektur und Rekonstruktionen nach historischen Fotos und Originalplänen. ZWISCHENTÖNE - Die Sammlung FORBERG in der Albertina

The Forberg Collection was founded by Kurt Forberg in the 1959s and presented to the Albertina in 2007 by Mathias and Eva Forberg on a permanent loan basis. Comprising sculptures, paintings and works on paper in the area of Classical Modernism the exhibition "Nuances - the Forberg Collection" contains works by Picasso, Braque and Gris to members of the "Blauer Reiter" like Kandinsky, Muenter, Macke and Jawlensky or "Brücke" like Kirchner, Pechstein, Müller and Schlemmer. Especially note worthy are several works by Paul Klee. Until Jan 22, 2011.

Die Ausstellung "Zwischentöne" in der Alberten zeigt Werke aus der Sammlung Forberg, die Gemälde und Skulpturen, Arbeiten auf Papier und Druckgrafiken umfasst. Neben Arbeiten von Picasso, Gris und Braque umfasst sie auch Werke des Expressionismus der Künstler des "Blauern Reiter" Kandinsky, Münter, Macke und Jawlensky und der "Brücke": Kirchner, Müller, Pechstein und Schlemmer. As part of the ten-year anniversary of the Leopold Museum’s opening the exhibition "The Excitement Continues" presents for the first time in a museum works from the Leopold II Collection. In this Rudolf Leopold collected mostly austrian art from post war to contemporary art and purchased mostly works not so much for their sheer art historical value but for his own taste, likes and excitement. Als Teil der Ausstellungen zum 10jahres-Tag der Eröffnung des Leopold Museums zeigt "The Excitement Continues" zum ersten mal Werke aus der Sammlung Leopold II. Nach dem Verkauf seiner Sammlung an die Republik Österreich und der Gründung des Leopold Museums widmete sich Rudolf Leopold auch der österreichischen Kunst von der Nachkriegszeit bis zu zeitgenössischen Positionen. The Bank Austria Kunstforum presents some 70 works by the Columbian painter Fernando Botero (*1932 in Medellín). The opulent paintings are ranging from the late 50s until today covering themes like every day life, bullfight, sex, violence and religion. For the last event before the wrecking ball will finally tear down the place to make room for a new building the Kulturnetz Hernals has put together a long list of participating artists and a great show. The finissage will be held on Sep 27, 2011 with a concert and then this location will be gone. We hope for a new Aufbruch in Hernals soon.

Bevor die Abrissbirne kommt hat das Kulturnetz Hernals eine ganze Reihe von Künstlern eingeladen sich in einer letzten Ausstellung mit der Location und den vorgefundenen Materialien in der alten KFZ Werkstatt auseinanderzusetzen. Das spannende Ergebnis ist nur noch bis zum 27. Sep. 2011 zu sehen, aber die Finissage wird mit einem Fest und Konzert würdig gefeiert und es bleibt die hoffnung auf einen baldigen neuerlichen Aufbruch in Hernals.

Lepold Museum celebrates 10 years with Egon Schiele Project

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Leopold Museum shows a huge exhibition dedicated to the oeuvre of EgonSchiele “Melancholy and Provocation”. As part of the show in six rooms contemporary artists are entering in a dialogue with the work and personality of Egon Schiele.

Unter der Nordbrücke fand am 10. September das Jährliche Treffen von lokalen und internationalen Graffitikünstlern zum Gedenken an Levin Statzer statt. Dieses Jahr zeigten die Writer CAT 22, DIZER, MASON, MORON, NUG, QUIK, RDKU, ROCKY, SCHWARZ, SHER & VINO auf der großen Street Party ihre Kunst.

"Museum of Desires " at mumok

Karola Kraus reopens the mumok with "Museum of Desires " where she presents not only artworks belonging to the mumok collection but also some pieces who she thinks are essential to have in the collections and should be aquired with the help of sponsors. Among these are works by John Baldessari, Dan Flavin, Blinky Palermo, Isa Genzken, and Franz West From Sep 10, 2011 to Jan 8, 2012.

Karola Kraus, die neue Direktorin des mumok präsentiert ihre erste Ausstellung nach Renovierung und Umbau des Hauses. Im "Museum der Wünsche" finden sich zwischen den Highlights der ca. 9.000 Werke umfassenden Sammlung auch Arbeiten, die für Kraus notwendig sind, um die Sammlung zu komplettieren und sinnvoll weiterzuführen. Diese sollen mit Hilfe von Sponsoren erworben werden. Neugestaltet sind der Eingangsbereich und das Café, im Untergeschoss befindet sich jetzt ein Kino- und Veranstaltungssaal indem in Zukunft Mittwochs Filme gezeigt oder Lectures gehalten werden sollen. Ausstellung bis zum 8.1.2011.

Tatort Hernals Festival by Kulturnetz Hernals

The Kulturnet Hernals is celebrating "Tatort Hernals - Art and Culture Festival" in Vienna's 17th district. Performances, music, literature, exhibitions in the KNH Basislokal at Geblergasse 47 or in many shop windows around Elterleinplatz, where the public fountain is turned into a temporary textile sculpture. Lots of fun for kids and adults. From June 16 - 26, 2011.

Das Kulturnetz Hernals feiert sein Kunst- und Kulturfestival "Tatort Hernals" mit Performances, Konzerten, Lesungen und Ausstellungen nicht nur im Basislager Geblergasse 47, einer ehemaligen KFZ Werkstatt, sondern auch in den Schaufenstern vieler Geschäfte und auf den Plätzen des Bezirks. Der Zauberbrunnen am Elterleinplatz wurde temporär in eine textilen Skulptur verwandelt. Noch bis zum 26. Juni. Der besondere Tipp - auch im Kuchenloch von H.A.P.P.Y, gleich neben dem KNH, vorbeischauen.

theartVIEw - upstairs the Albertina was throwing a big pre-opening-party for all her FB friends with music drinks. Downstairs you could enjoy plenty of contemporary art from Gerhard Richter to Kiki Smith. More than 150 works aquired over the last few years.

Bei der ersten Pre-Opening-Party für ihre FB FreundInnen waren die ehrwürdigen Hallen der Albertina" gesteckt voll. Während im Harriet Hartmann Court die Musik spielte und den Drinks zugesprochen wurde gingen die Begrüßungsworte vom Hausherrn Klaus Albrecht Schröder regelrecht unter. Groß war aber auch der Zuspruch unten im Kellergeschoß zu den ca. 150 Werken zeitgenössischer Künstler von Gerhard Richter bis Kiki Shmith, die in den letzten Jahren zur Sammlung hinzugefügt werden konnten.

theartVIEw at the Schwarzenbergplatz, where the sound sculpture "The Morning Line" has been installed for the next six month - starting with a four day long festival where you can listen to music by contemporary composers. The non pavillion was created by NYC artist Matthew Ritchie for the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation.

Am Schwarzenbergplatz wurde die Soundskulptur "The Morning Line", die der New Yorker Künstler Matthew Ritchie für die Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation entwickelt hat, für die nächsten sechs Monate installiert. Zu Beginn gibt es gleich ein viertägiges Festival für zeitgenössische elektronische Musik, teilweise extra für diesen Anlass und diese Installation komponiert.

The Belvedere confronts 57 works of Futurism and Kubism with 121 pieces of the Viennese Kinetism from the 1920th. Among the interesting artists to be explored are Erika Giovanna Klien, Marianne Ullmann and Elisabeth Karlinksy.
