Renate Bertlmann Fragile Obsessions at Belvedere 21

The Renate Bertlmann retrospective includes some two hundred exhibits, ranging from the late 1960s to her recent artistic production, including iconic works from the 1970s, sculptures and installations, performative photographs, and drawings, as well as numerous works that will be on view for the first time. Renate Bertlmann is one of the main protagonists of the Austrian feminist avant-garde. In recent years she has gained international attention, especially through her solo presentation at the Austrian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale 2019. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, the Belvedere honors her oeuvre with a first comprehensive retrospective. Bertlmann's radical, ironically provocative works subvert social attributions and stereotypes of gender, femininity, and masculinity, thus addressing the female body as a battlefield as well as the ambivalences of pleasure and pain, desire and discipline, tenderness and vulnerability. Curated by Luisa Ziaja, Assistant Curator: Andrea Kopranovic. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive publication. 20230929 - 20240303

Louise Bourgeois – Persistent Antagonism at Lower Belvedere

At the Lower Belvedere Louise Bourgeois’s paintings from the 1940s are placed in dialogue with a selection of sculptures, installations, drawings, and prints from all periods of her storied career. In her oil paintings made between 1938 and 1949 that the French-American artist first developed the formal vocabulary and defined the thematic concerns that she would continue to explore over the following seven decades. By the 1990s, she had won global renown for her artistic achievements, becoming famous for her monumental spider sculptures and room-sized Cells. Curated by Sabine Fellner and Johanna Hofer. 2023/09/22 – 2024/01/28.

Louise Bourgeois – Unbeirrbarer Widerstand

Gerwald Rockenschaub's work follows the principle of reducing elements, structures, and color contrasts to only the essential. The works of the radical minimalist are simple and precise but also complex. At the main room of the Belvedere 21 are 24 monitors hanging on three gray walls. On the screens you can see short animated videos with simple geometrical forms in bright colors, which remind you at early computer games. Infront of the walls are two long benches and a high desk for the viewer. The Installation interacts with the architecture of the museum and the screens point to painting and museal hanging of pictures. Curated by Axel Köhne. 25.11.2022 - 12.03.2023.

The exhibition "LOOK" of the HEIDI HORTEN COLLECTION is a tribute to the founder of the museum, Heidi Goëss-Horten. It spotlights art and fashion and their inspiring interplay at the museum HEIDI HORTEN COLLECTION. The “look” of women and looking at women, as well as other aspects associated with the feminine, are key themes in the Heidi Horten Collection. Based on these topics, the exhibition explores various thematic questions in eight chapters. 21.10.2022 – 16.04.2023.

Artists: Friedrich von Amerling, Francis Bacon, Alexander Calder, Kees van Dongen, Jean Dubuffet, Lyonel Feiniger, August Macke, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Andy Warhol and contemporary artworks by Sylvie Fleury, Gelatin, Lena Henke, Birgit Jürgenssen, Michèle Pagel, Philipp Timischl, and more.

21.10.2022 – 16.04.2023.

The retrospective Helmut Newton Legacy at the Kunstforum Vienna shows 300 or more works that document Newton’s complete oeuvre. Newton is primarily renowned for his photos of women: powerful, aggressive, self-assertive – naked and dressed – they challenge the viewer. Newton’s career developed first and foremost through his fashion photography – which is the focus of this exhibition. Newton first started photographing nudes in the 1980s and with his style probed social and moral limits. The exhibition was created to celebrate Newtons 100th birthday in 2020 presents iconic photos and also works that have never been on show before. Curated by Matthias Harder (Director & Curator Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin) and Evelyn Benesch (Curator Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien). 19.10.2022 – 15.01.2023.

In the mumok exhibition The Animal Within the animal as a motif serves as a starting point to get to a materialist understanding of art and life. The mumok collection contains nearly five hundred works related to animals—a considerable quantity that raises the question of what kind of zoo the museum in fact is. What is kept, researched, and displayed both here and there to protect “wild life” and the “freedom of art”? And in whose interest? Curated by Manuela Ammer and Ulrike Müller. 22.09.2022 - 26.02.2023

In her exhibition Still Shifting, Mother Field ,at the Main hall of the SECESSION Jennifer Tee probes fundamental questions about where we belong, about spirituality and transcendence. Tee combines collages and sculptures including ceramic domes, knitted floor objects, and textile coverings with performance art to uncover the fragile entanglements of life. Anna Daučíková is a pioneer of feminist-queer art in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Two recent video works form the thematic framework of the exhibition. At the center of both works is the search for a prototypical, non-verbal language. The title of Lieselott Beschorner’s exhibition In the Breath of Time is a direct reference to the environment in which her work comes into existence. The Secession is excited to host her exhibition featuring recent creations as well as selected pieces from earlier periods of her oeuvre. Until Nov 6th, 2022.

Vienna Street Photography at Wien Museum MUSA is the developing gaze on big city life, from the 1860s to the present. In addition to iconic images of Vienna that capture decisive moments in urban life, the show presents numerous never-before-exhibited or published photographs that bring the city’s everyday life as well as the lives of its inhabitants to the fore: impressive street scenes, intimate snapshots, and fleeting glimpses of urban life from early urban photography to the Instagram aesthetics of the present. Most of the works come from the photo collection of the Wien Museum, which showcases its vast holdings like never before. They capture the hustle and bustle on streets, squares, and markets, uncover unexpected encounters, and document moments of indolence and pleasure. May 19th to Oct 23rd,2022.

With Still Life, Siggi Hofer has conceived an installation in the main hall of the Secession, where we enter a large tableau composed of numerous and diverse works that in many ways reflects the baffling complexity of our contemporary reality. Having come to look and moving about the room, we find ourselves cast as actors and co-creators of the exhibition; we need to get our bearings, make sense of the arrangement, tease out interconnections and meanings.

At the Secession, Dineo Seshee Bopape has developed the site-responsive installation Lerato le le golo (...la go hloka bo kantle) that transports visitors with its intense physicality. The exhibition space is kissed with pink light and filled with the buzzing of honeybees. Cupolas and knee-high walls made of pressed clay speak the language of that ephemeral thing brought forth and housed through form via the architecture of open-air enclosures/courtyards in some traditional African villages (reception area, courtyard, court, outdoor prayer enclosures). These create a flowing spatial spiral movement and structure between inside and outside, to the work’s center, and offer an entrance … a portal. Circular depressions in the floor at one of the centers of the ensembles mirror a cosmic constellation and form linkages to earlier generations of works by Bopape. Like the clay bowls and vessels they act as containers, receptacles, orifices or invocation instruments and monuments to invoke amongst others, ideas of the feminine and … satellites (of home: home ground/ home soil).
How To Become A Fossil presents the DIS collective’s major new work — Everything But The World (2021, 38min) with a site-specific installation and outdoor sculpture.
The film, Everything But The World was conceived as a TV pilot plotting new narratives for new histories. A multi-genre docu-sci-fi, the series departs from the premise of a nature show by turning the camera onto nature’s least natural invention: us.

Der als TV-Pilot konzipierte Film Everything But The World will Geschichte(n) neu erzählen. 4. The exhibition DALÍ - FREUD AN OBSESSION in the newly opened Lower Belvedere covers, in chronological order, the period from Dalí's discovery of Freud's writings to their personal meeting. A collection of paintings, drawings, Surrealist objects, photographs, films, books, journals, letters, and other documents illustrates Dalí's attraction to Freud as well as the inspiration it provided. On view are some 100 works, including highlights such as the paintings Neo-Cubist Academy (1926), The Lugubrious Game (1929), and Swans Reflecting Elephants (1937). Curated by Jaime Brihuega Sierra. Jan 28th to May 29th, 2022.

Kurator: Jaime Brihuega Sierra. 28.01. – 29.05.2022.

Wolfgang Tillmans. Sound Is Liquid at the mumok features early photographs produced in the pop-culture milieu of the 1990s along with abstract images, high-resolution photographs of the globalized and digitalized reality of the early twenty-first century, and photos taken shortly before and during the coronavirus pandemic. Guided by the self-critical question "What do I really see? What do I see, and what do I want to see? What is in the picture?” he devotes his work to people and bodies, to landscapes, architectures, objects, and celestial phenomena. Curated by Matthias Michalka. Nov 27th, 2021 to April 24th, 2022.

In her solo exhibition in the SECESSON’s main hall, Nairy Baghramian presents an installation that responds to the architectural specifics of the setting, featuring sculptures from her series Dwindlers and Breath Holding Spells—from which the exhibition also takes its title—as well as the new wall piece Deep Furrow.
For Sarah Rapson’s exhibition Ode To Psyche in the basement galleries of the SECESSON, her new works of art has been shipped from England and there may also be film and perhaps some works on paper in this show. There is no subtext to art, it’s not like a dream. It’s a session.
For her exhibition at the SECESSON, Nora Turato has produced a new sound installation which grew from her research into the politics of accents and Western media. ri-mEm-buhr THuh mUHn-ee can be described as a sound study of the artist’s growing vocal arsenal. Through her ongoing engagement with the spoken word, Turato has developed an internal repository of sorts – a cache of accents, dialects, and idiolects, between which she can rapidly alternate and echo in seance-like offerings.

Kunsthalle Wien dedicates to Vienna-based artists* Ana Hoffner
ex-Prvulovic* and Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński two solo shows, which take
place simultaneously in the upper hall of Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier.
Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic*’s works take the shape of multimedia
installations mixing film, photography, objects, and text. She* looks
closely at the fabrication of history, memory, and
subjectivity—insisting on the unconscious at work in these processes. In
the exhibition, the artist* (re)tells the stories of queerness as a
survival strategy, of non-alignment as ethics (and not only as
geopolitics), and of family as a space for chosen kinship. She* stages
moments of subversion, crisis, and resistance, and in this way attempts
to figure out how a contemporary subject can dig up and appropriate
hidden histories in order to escape cultural, social, and psychological
assignations.
In her works, be they photographic series, films, or installations,
Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński creates spaces for encounter, conversation, and
sometimes confrontation between herself and the viewer, but first and
foremost between herself and the people who populate her pieces, her
memories, and her imagination. Intertwining critical Black feminist
theory, conceptual visual strategies, and (science-)fictional narration,
Kazeem-Kamiński explores diverse methods to communicate across time and
space as well as to set the conditions and to create spaces—real and
imagined—for the processing of the past, invention of the future, and
disintegration of the present as it is. 22.10.2021 - 06.02.2022.

Verwandtschaft.
Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński schafft in ihren Arbeiten –
22.10.2021 - 06.02.2022.

With Geistervölker, meaning “ghost populations”, Kunsthalle Vienna presents a comprehensive solo exhibition of Austrian artist Ines Doujak (b. 1959, lives and works in Vienna), revolving around histories of
> pandemics, transmission of viruses, and their relation to global trade and to the current economic, microbiological, and ecological crises, by means of sculpture, photography, performance, film, and installation. In Geistervölker, the artist combines both new and old projects to create a constellation of works that conceptualize the constant and absurd movement between accumulation of capital and the impossibility to continue extracting from the Earth because it has reached the limit of what we greedily and continuously take. The textiles, videos, papier-mâché sculptures and installations on display form a narrative linking global chains of economic production, consumption, and exploitations and the present pandemics, as well as the recurrent patterns that cause and spread pandemics historically. Curators: What, How & for Whom / WHW (Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović). 01.10.2021 - 16.01.2022.

Alongside the exhibition Doujak produces podcasts and every October Tuesday at 5 pm, visitors of Kunsthalle Wien will be invited to join a collective listening of a new episode.

Kurator*innen What, How & for Whom / WHW (Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić und Sabina Sabolović). 01.10.2021 - 16.01.2022.

The Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien presents the first comprehensive
retrospective of her works in Austria in almost thirty years. Mostly
earlier works shows her widespread artistic practice: kinetic sculptural
works, photography, drawings, poems and film. She has created her own
symbolically charged cosmos in which reality and fiction overlap, and
dualisms such as material/spirit, subject/object, male/female are
transgressed. Her works make up an expanding web of objects, motifs and
themes. She interweaves numerous traditions of art, literature and film
– likewise mythology and the world of fairy tales. All three of her
feature films are shown in the basement. Curator: Bettina M. Busse.

Schlüsselwerke von Rebecca Horn. Die großteils frühen Arbeiten aus
unterschiedlichen Genres – kinetische Skulpturen, Photographie,

vienna contemporary, the artfair has found a new location and is held
this year at the Alte Post in the first district of Vienna. The place is
currently a huge construction site but despite of that several large
rooms have been adapted for the fair. So you can find 25 selected
galleries from Central and Eastern Europe and ZONE1, where 7 galleries
present young Austrian artists or artists with a connection to Austria.
This year Vienna contemporary is also strongly connected with curated by

With this show mumok places the emphasis on Zobernig’s paintings, with select recent groups of works. The artist designed the exhibition architecture himself. Since the beginning of his artistic practice in the early 1980s, the artist has built up a comprehensive painterly oeuvre, always based on his attempt to explore color like a “scientist.” Thus, in Zobernig’s work, painting has become a machine for the creation of insight. Characteristics of the artist’s method in this context are strategies of simplification, standardization, and systematization using predefined rules and the artistic appropriation of industrial norms and widespread samples. Curated by Karola Kraus. 19.06. - 17.10.2021.

19.06. - 17.10.2021.

Kunsthalle Wien and Wiener Festwochen present the joint exhibition And if I devoted my life to one of its feathers?, which combines works by more than 35 artists from around the world, located everywhere from the Amazon region to Australia, from Guatemala to India. Their works seek not only to awaken public consciousness to the realities of environmental exploitation and destruction, but also to question and to deconstruct traditional Western patriarchal models, gender roles, and enduring colonial and racist discourses and invites the visitors to take part in a unique conversation about power, sovereignty, self-representation, and the reclaiming of a plurality of life choices. 15.05. – 26.9.2021.

15.05. – 26.9.2021.

Vienna Secession and Wiener Festwochen present a newly commissioned work by artist and choreographer Maria Hassabi: HERE. The live installation invites visitors to share time and presence with six dancers in the Secession’s iconic exhibition hall. Over several weeks they will navigate a choreography that unfolds at a decelerated pace within a sculptural environment. Embedded in a sound composition, a female voice counting the seconds from 1 to 14,399 fades in and out, underlining the eternal succession of time. Immersed in this continuum, the dancers’ movements create a situation of everchanging presence, one that demonstrates the slippery nature of “here-ness.” May 14 – June 20, 2021.

14.05. - 20.06.2021.
