Pierre Bonnard at Kunstforum Wien

With "The Color of Memory" the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien is showing the first retrospective in Austria of the post-Impressionist Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947). The exhibition focuses on colour as central vehicle of the artist’s pictorial language. Even if Bonnard’s colour painting in the late pictures approaches the borders of abstraction, in contrast to the avant-garde of the early century he never questions the representational mode. Bonnard’s multifaceted and constantly surprising work will be presented with many loans from international museums including the Tate in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery in Washington, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, also from renowned private collections. Mit "Pierre Bonnard – Die Farbe der Erinnerung" zeigt das Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien die erste Retrospektive des Postimpressionisten Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947) in Österreich. Die Ausstellung konzentriert sich auf Bonnards reifes Werk, das nach seinem ersten Besuch an der Côte d’Azur 1909 und der tiefgreifenden Erfahrung des Mittelmeerlichts einsetzt. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung steht die Farbe als zentrales Ausdrucks- und Gestaltungsmittel des Künstlers. Auch wenn Bonnards Farbmalerei in den späten Bildern bis an die Grenzen der Abstraktion geht, stellt er die Gegenständlichkeit anders als die Avantgarden zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts nie in Frage. Bonnards vielfältiges und immer wieder neu zu entdeckendes Werk wird mit zahlreichen Leihgaben aus internationalen Museen, wie der Tate in London, dem Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, der National Gallery in Washington, dem Musée d’Orsay in Paris oder der Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Kopenhagen, aber auch aus renommierten privaten Sammlungen präsentiert.
