The Cindy Sherman Effect at Kunstforum Wien

The Cindy Sherman Effect. Identity and Transformation in Contemporary Art. at the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien addresses one of the key issues in art: the preoccupation with themes of identity, its construction, forms of transformation and fiction are hot topics in the face of a world that is in constant flux through increasing globalisation. At the same time, new technologies such as the Internet, gene manipulation and cloning give cause for us to consider the concept of identity in terms of subject generation and definition. Cindy Sherman’s work is counted among the classics of performance photography and artistic role play; starting out from this base, the exhibition will cast light on these relevant questions pertaining to the theme of Identity. Sherman’s photographic works – developed out of 1970s performance art and her specific interest in ever-changing identities – has never ceased to be a formative stylistic influence down to the immediate present. Sherman’s legacy, this artistic approach was followed by many artists; to name only a few: Candice Breitz, Sophie Calle, Elke Krystufek, Zoe Leonard, Sarah Lucas,  Zanele Muholi, Pipilotti Rist, Markus Schinwald, Lorna Simpson, Wu Tsang, Gavin Turk, Ryan Trecartin, Gillian Wearing et al. The exhibition in the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien will juxtapose works by Cindy Sherman with those of contemporary artists in order to focus on such themes as deconstruction of the portrait, cultural, gender-specific and sexual stereotypes, also the construction and fiction of identity. Die Ausstellung "The Cindy Sherman Effect. Identität und Transformation in der zeitgenössischen Kunst" im Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien behandelt eine der zentralen Fragestellungen in der Kunst: Die Beschäftigung mit den Themen Identität, deren Konstruktion, Formen der Transformation und Fiktion sind von großer Aktualität angesichts der sich durch die stetig zunehmende Globalisierung immer schneller wandelnden Welt. Gleichzeitig geben neue Technologien, wie Internet, Genmanipulation, oder Klonen, vermehrt Anlass dazu, über den Begriff Identität im Sinn von Subjektgenerierung und -definition nachzudenken. Ausgehend von Cindy Shermans Werk, das zu den Klassikern der inszenierten Fotografie und des künstlerischen Rollenspiels zählt, werden diese relevanten Fragen zum Thema Identität beleuchtet. Shermans fotografische Arbeiten, die sich aus der Performance-Kunst der 1970er-Jahre und dem besonderen Interesse der Künstlerin an sich wandelnden Identitäten entwickelte, kann bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart als stilprägend angesehen werden. In der Nachfolge Shermans sind eine Vielzahl von Künstlerinnen und Künstler diesem künstlerischen Ansatz gefolgt, um nur einige zu nennen: Candice Breitz, Sophie Calle, Elke Krystufek, Zoe Leonard, Sarah Lucas, Zanele Muholi, Pipilotti Rist, Markus Schinwald, Lorna Simpson, Wu Tsang, Gavin Turk, Ryan Trecartin, Gillian Wearing et al. Die Ausstellung im Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien wird in Form von Gegenüberstellungen von Werken von Cindy Sherman und zeitgenössischen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern Themen wie Dekonstruktion des Portraits, kulturelle, geschlechterspezifische und sexuelle Stereotypen sowie Konstruktion und Fiktion von Identität untersuchen. sammlung VERBUND shows the widely unknown early works by Cindy Sherman under the title “That’s me – That’s not me” and presents a “catalogue raisonné” compiled by Gabriele Schor in close collaboration with the artist. Early series of photographies, where Sherman already played numerous roles, were cut out by her and put together to complex stories like "Bus Riders" and "Murder Mystery People" or turned into animation films. Until May 16, 2012.

MoMA opens with a Cindy Sherman retrospective on Feb 26, 2012.

Die sammlung VERBUND zeigt frühe Arbeiten (1975-1977) von Cindy Sherman. Schon bevor sie für ihre "Film Stills" berühmt wurde fotografierte sie sich in den unterschiedlichsten Rollen, z.B. in den Cutout Serie "Bus Riders", "Doll Clothes" oder "Murder Mystery". Die ausgeschnittenen Figuren setzte sie zu teilweise komplexen Storyboards zusammen oder verwendete sie für Animationsfilmen. Bis 16. Mai 2012.

Das teilweise unbekannte, verschollene und wenig dokumentierte Frühwerk wurde von der Leiterin der Sammlung Gabriele Schor mit der Künstlerin aufbereitet und in einem umfangreichen Katalog dokumentiert. Ab 26.02.2012 zeigt das MoMA eine umfassende Cindy Sherman Retrospektive.
