The exhibition JOSEF FRANK: Against Design at MAK presents the full scope of Frank’s pioneering and diverse oeuvre. Josef Frank (born in 1885 in the town of Baden near Vienna) is not only one of the most important Austrian architects of the 20th century, but also, with his designs for textiles and furniture, one of the modernist designers whose influence continues to be felt in international design today. In 1933 Frank saw no choice but to leave Austria in light of the mounting anti-Semitism and emigrated to Sweden, where—apart from a period spent living and working in the United States between 1939 and 1947—he continued to live up until his death in 1967. Frank`s work as a designer continues to be considered contemporary today. Especially today, Josef Frank’s ideas about an uncontrived and unpretentious functionality, whose aim was an independent, free, enlightened bourgeois domestic culture far from stylistic dogmas and fashionable conventions, seem more relevant than ever. Die Ausstellung JOSEF FRANK: Against Design im MAK widmet sich dem wegweisenden und vielfältigen Œuvre des Architekten und Designer. Der 1885 in Baden bei Wien geborene Josef Frank, der Aufgrund des zunehmenden Antisemitismus im Jahr 1933 nach Schweden emigrierte, zählt nicht nur zu den bedeutendsten österreichischen ArchitektInnen des 20. Jahrhunderts, sondern mit seinen Entwürfen für Textilien und Möbel auch zu den GestalterInnen der Moderne, denen das internationale Design bis heute wichtige Impulse verdankt. HOLLEIN at MAK

The MAK exhibition HOLLEIN undertakes a sweeping new contemplation of the complex oeuvre of star architect, Pritzker Prize winner, designer, artist, theorist and educator Hans Hollein – based to a large extent on materials from Hans Hollein’s archives that have never been shown in public, including working models, original drawings, objects, and items left over from exhibitions, sketches, notes, scratch paper, photographs, films, and much more. June 25th to Oct 5th, 2014.

Das MAK unternimmt mit der Ausstellung HOLLEIN eine umfassende Neubetrachtung des Gesamtwerks des Stararchitekten, Pritzker-Preisträger, Designer, Künstler, Theoretiker und Lehrenden Hans Hollein - anhand von großteils noch nie öffentlich gezeigten Materialien aus dem Archiv Hans Holleins: Arbeitsmodellen, Originalzeichnungen, Objekten und Ausstellungsrelikten, Skizzen, Notizen, Konzeptpapieren, Fotografien, Filmen u. v. m. 25.06.2014 – 05.10.2014.

Reinstallation of the MAK Permanent Collection ASIA. China – Japan – Korea.

The Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata developed the concept and design for the reinstallation of the MAK Permanent Collection ASIA. Kawamata’s ideas for the MAK Collection are based in concept on permanent change and the play of light and shade. Two large, scaffold-like showcase blocks will house the exhibits from the collection, enabling diverse viewpoints. Tadashi Kawamata places the artworks in a context that keeps things moving, whether the act of observation or the observers themselves, for he says: “My projects are never finished; it seems quite natural to me that something is never finished.” Curator Johannes Wieninger. The MAK Permanent Collection ASIA is accompanied by the MAK/GUIDE ASIA. China – Japan – Korea.

Der Japanische Künstler Tadashi Kawamata hat Neukonzeption der Schausammlung Asien im MAK entwickelt, die vom Gedanken der permanenten Veränderung sowie dem Spiel von Licht und Schatten getragen ist. Die Exponate werden in großen, gerüstartigen Vitrinenblöcken präsentiert, die eine Vielfalt von Betrachtungsmöglichkeiten ergeben. Tadashi Kawamata setzt die Kunstwerke einem Kontext aus, der die Betrachtung wie den Betrachtenden in Bewegung hält, denn, so der Künstler, „meine Projekte sind nie fertig, es erscheint mir ganz natürlich, dass etwas nie fertig wird.“ Kurator Johannes Wieninger. "SIGNS TAKEN IN WONDER - Searching for Contemporary Istanbul" at the MAK surveys the work of 33 international contemporary artists, born between the 1920s and the 1980s, whose art work engages with aspects of the culture, history, and daily life of Istanbul.

Im Fokus von "Zeichen, gefangen im Wunder - Auf der Suche nach Istanbul heute" in der MAK-Ausstellungshalle 33 internationale KünstlerInnen, geboren in den 1920er bis 1980er Jahren, deren Arbeiten unterschiedliche Aspekte von Kultur, Geschichte und des täglichen Lebens in Istanbul spiegeln. Die Ausstellung skizziert Prozesse, die Narrationen des Kleinen in einer Zeit der Größe und Globalisierung verdeutlichen, und präsentiert eine Sammlung kleiner Welten und kleiner Wunder. Der Fokus auf den Einzelnen, das Individuelle, das die Konstruktion von „Weltbildern“ und „Weltbildung“ in Bewegung setzt und ihre Reflexion im Werk bedeutender SchriftstellerInnen wie Mario Levi oder Orhan Pamuk haben großen Einfluss auf kollektive Vorstellungen zu Istanbul. Gustav Klimt's Cartoons for Stoclet House at MAK

For the 150th anniversary of Gustav Klimt's birthday the MAK puts the nine cartoons for the mosaic frieze in the dining hall of Stoclet House, Brussels, at the center of the exhibition "GUSTAV KLIMT: Expectation and Fulfillment". After several years of restoration, the cartoons are now again presented in the Permanent Collection. The exhibition is completed with drawings of various design pieces for the Stoclet House by architect Joseph Hoffmann and works by other artists of the Wiener Werkstätte, who contributed to this gesamtkunstwerk. Until July 15, 2012.

Die Ausstellung GUSTAV KLIMT: ERWARTUNG UND ERFÜLLUNG im MAK zeigt die Entwurfszeichnungen zum Mosaikfries im Palais Stoclet, die zu den wichtigsten Exponaten des Museums zählen. Nach mehrjähriger Restaurierung sind die neun Kartons jetzt wieder in der MAK-Schausammlung präsentiert. 
Die Schau gibt Einblicke in den Entstehungsprozess des Frieses und Klimts Arbeitsweise und zeigt die Familie Stoclet als wesentlichem Auftraggeber der Wiener Werkstätte in Entwurfszeichnungen von Joseph Hoffmann und anderen Künstlern für das Gesamtkunstwerk des Palais. 21.03.2012 - 15.07.2012

THE MAGIC OF DIVERSITY at the MAK

With the working exhibition THE MAGIC OF DIVERSITY The MAK as Applied Space of the Future invites to an in-depth engagement with the MAK collection. Central elements from the MAK collection will be placed in a present-day frame of reference that prompt a processual re-reading of the collection and is put in relation to contemporary art by Franz West, Heimo Zobernig, Donald Judd and others. Erwin Wurm – "Schoener Wohnen" at the MAK

Erwin Wurm shows furniture remodelt into furniture in the MAK and promises thereby "Schoener Wohnen". Cupboards from the 30th and 60th turned upside turn into sofas or tables and chairs wear pullover. Until Sep. 04, 2011.

"Schöner Wohnen" – Erwin Wurm zeigt im MAK Möbel au den 30er und 60er Jahren die mit kleinen Eingriffen und Verschiebungen und -drehungen neu eingerichtet werden. Schränke zum Sitzen und tafeln, Sessel die Pullover tragen und in der Hausbar steht Inländerrum. Bis zum 4. Sep. 2011.

To mark the 100th birthday of former Austrian Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky the MAK presents 49 black-and-white photographic portraits by Konrad Rufus Mueller.

Zum hundertsten Geburtstag von Bruno Kreisky (22. Jan. 1911) zeigt das MAK neunundvierzig großformatige schwarzweiß Portraits des deutschen Photographen Konrad Rufus Müller aus verschiedenen Lebensabschnitten Kreiskys.

Eva Schlegel "In between" at the MAK

The MAK dedicates Eva Schlegel an impressive one woman show. The center piece of "In between" is about flying and falling as synonym for succeeding or failing. Another installation is made of more than 200 weather baloons. The exhibition is completd with works on plumbum, a white cube with pornographic pieces and a room with her well known out of focus portraits of women.

Das MAK widmet Eva Schlegel eine beeindruckende Einzelausstellung, deren zentrale Arbeit sich mit dem Fliegen und Fallen als Synonym für gelingen und Scheitern auseinandersetzt. Eine andere große Installation besteht aus mehr als 200 Wetterbalons. Die Schau wird ergänzt durch Fotos auf Blei, pornografische Lackarbeiten und die bekannteren unscharfen Frauenportraits.
