Flying High: Women Artists of Art Brut at Kunstforum Vienna

With "Flying High: Women Artists of Art Brut" the exhibition in the Kunstforum Wien is presenting a comprehensive show of the women artists of Art Brut, in all their diversity, their international relevance, their historical and contemporary dimension. A history of women’s art is always closely interwoven with the history of emancipation, and in the case of Art Brut the constellation is all the more precarious. For decades, exclusively male discoverers and propagandists of the genre – psychiatrists and artists – have addressed the work of creative women patients in a way that can only be described as a process of elimination. In recent years historical barriers between Art Brut and “high” art seem to be rapidly breaking down, aesthetic criteria are gaining in relevance over diagnostic interest and the artists’ “eccentricity”; what has been hidden or marginalised until now is being washed to the surface. For more than a decade, Art Brut museums have been mushrooming all over the world. Over and above this, Art Brut is being shifted more and more into the spotlight of the international art public. More interest is also being given to women’s art. The corresponding contributions to biennials and a kind of market mania are manifestations of this, also on the female side of Art Brut. Curators: Ingried Brugger (Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien) & Hannah Rieger. 15.02. – 23.06.2019.

Artists: Keiko Abe, Meta Anderes, Perihan Arpacilar, Laila Bachtiar, Beverly Baker, Jacqueline Bartes, Marie Anna Beer, Else Blankenhorn, Pearl Blauvelt, Thérèse Bonnelalbay, Madame Bouttier, Ida Buchmann, Marguerite Burnat-Provins, Helen Butler Wells, Misleidys Castillo Pedroso, Aloïse Corbaz, Bridget Cronnin, Louise Deci, Barbara Demlczuk, Adelheid Duvanel, Madame Favre, Marie von Fischer-von Sinner, Miss G., Jill Galliéni, Madge Gill, Frau Gr., Martha Grunenwaldt, Guo Fengyi, Emma Hauck, Margarethe Held, Hanna Hellmann, Ilse Helmkamp, Magalí Herrera, Martha Hoge, Gertrude Honzatko-Mediz, Nina Karasek, Katharina, Yumiko Kawai, Margaret Knox Tisdall, Julia Krause-Harder, Emma Kunz, Solange Lantier, Marie Lieb, Marie-Rose Lortet, Elise Mahler, Ida Maly, Rosa Marbach, Emma Marti, Simone Marye, Emma Mohr, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Megumi Otori, Teresa Ottallo, Giuseppina Pastore, Marilena Pelosi, Aline von Perfall, Laure Pigeon, Gwenydd Powell, Helen Meta Hannah Prager, Maria Puth, Helene Reimann, Sigrid Reingruber, Stephanie Richards, Karoline Rosskopf, Jane Ruffié, Alma Rumball, Manuela Sagona, Chiyuki Sakagami, Clara Schuff, Constance Schwartzlin-Berberat, Judith Scott, Franca Settembrini, Mary T. Die Ausstellung "Flying High: Künstlerinnen der Art Brut" im Kunstforum Wien widmet sich erstmals umfassend Künstlerinnen der Art Brut in ihrer Vielfalt, ihrer Internationalität, ihrer historischen und gegenwärtigen Dimension. 15.2. – 23.6.2019.

Christian Kosmas Mayer at mumok

For his solo exhibition "Aeviternity" at mumok, Christian Kosmas Mayer investigates the dynamic relations between living creatures and inanimate objects. The exhibited objects are witnesses of a frozen moment in time, in which mostly schematically distinct concepts of time such as the past, present, and future, or before and after, and life and death, meld into one. This exhibition explores the theme of conservation both as a natural and as an artificial process of archiving. This is undertaken in order to critically reevaluate history and the present by placing evolutionary and natural phenomena into the framework of cultural history and science. Mayer’s work focuses on critical exploration of questions of archiving and conserving as deliberate acts that create history. 23.02. to 16.06.019.

23.02. – 16.06.019.

Heinz Frank at Kunsthalle Wien, Karlsplatz

Kunsthalle Wien, Karlsplatz: Heinz Frank (* 1939 Vienna). The Angle of the End Always Comes from Behind. Trained as an electrical engineer and architect, Heinz Frank has been working hands-on as a sculptor, draftsman, painter, and creator of linguistic and object art, as well as occasionally, designer of interiors and furniture since the 1970s. Aphoristic notes such as “The hole is the epitome of emptiness” provide the initial sparks for a creative process resulting in pictures and constructions that not only blur boundaries between genres, techniques, and materials. More generally, the artist suspends norms and conventions — or to be more precise, he strips them of their power as agents of the disconnect between reason and emotion. That is why one of Frank’s guiding mottos is “Thinking what one feels and feeling what one thinks.” Enlivened by a dash of irony and with what appears to be playful ease, his formal-visual, intellectual, and material balancing acts, which often take inspiration from diverse cultural strands, recombine what society and tradition would keep strictly separate in manifold variations. Frank’s background in architecture is evident throughout: the measure of all things, of their proportions and relation to the space around them, remains the human being—and the artist himself. Curator: Lucas Gehrmann.

Kunsthalle Wien, Karlsplatz: Heinz Frank (* 1939 Wien). Kurator: Lucas Gehrmann.

Gerard Byrne, Klara Lidén and Heidrun Holzfeind at SECESSION

Upon all the living and the dead gathers Gerard Byrne’s most recent works in the main hall of the SECESSION, activating a dialogue between the proto-cinematic moment of Jielemeguvvie guvvie sjisjnjeli (2016), the evasive temporality of In Our Time (2017), and A Visibility Matrix (2018), a new work co-authored with the artist Sven Anderson that borrows aggregation methodologies from early media art and cybernetics to picture current conditions of visibility. Across the works, underlying patterns and recurring interests become visible.

In her show Auf jeden Fall, Klara Lidén integrates videos of four new and recent performative actions into a sculptural display designed and made on site especially for the exhibition. It captures and reflects the prevailing climate of conformity and social indifference in present (western) politics and societies. With its make-shift inventory, however – plastic water canisters converted into lamps, tarped-off worn site fences that serve both as video screens and room dividers – the installation suggests alternative concepts for acknowledging and dealing with resources. Black mono prints in second-hand metal frames are spread throughout the gallery. Made with tools, materials and everyday objects used by the artist – strip lights, tarpaulin, orange net, a bicycle tyre – they take the same line, while interventions filmed in Berlin, New York and in Vienna demonstrate possibilities and potential of unexpected and unorthodox acting. The choice of materials clearly links the exhibition to an urban environment and its ever-present ongoing transformation.

For her exhibition the time is now. Heidrun Holzfeind has developed a new video installation composed of two films about the Japanese shamanic improvisation duo IRO. The couple Shizuko and Toshio Orimo have worked together since 1981. Their music, their activism in the peace and anti-nuclear movement, and their free-spirited way of life reflect an animist and pantheistic worldview that rejects commercialism in all its forms.

Gerard Byrnes Upon all the living and the dead versammelt Byrnes Werke der letzten Jahre im Hauptraum der SECESSION. Upon all the living and the dead rückt diese verschiedenen Werke in unmittelbare Nähe zueinander.

ATTERSEE Feuerstelle at Belvedere 21

The Belvedere 21 is devoting a large solo show to Christian Ludwig Attersee (* 1940) with a focus on his early work, featuring as yet little-known works. Over the course of almost sixty years, Christian Ludwig Attersee has created a multifaceted oeuvre with a very unique visual language. From his Würfel-BH to his Prothesenalphabet, from his wine label to the Attersee sausage, from his postage stamp to the Attersee house, the Austrian artist has turned his name into his trademark and ‘atterseeised’ his world. Pop, humour and irony characterise his work, which draws on the subjects of his life like the weather, sailing, nature, music and language. Similarly, the subjects of beauty and eroticism permeate Attersee’s entire oeuvre. The exhibition Feuerstelle shows all aspects of Attersee’s oeuvre, focusing on the first twenty years of his creative career. Whereas the bright colours and visual subjects in the early stages of his oeuvre are reminiscent of Pop Art, from the mid-1970s the artist adopts a more gesturally expressive drawing style that later morphs into the painterly. Collages, works on paper, photographs, films, music and paintings are displayed on an equal footing with inventions, craft and product design. More recent pictures complement Attersee’s early work and make it possible to identify the rigour in his oeuvre. Curated by Britta Schmitz. Feb 1st to Aug 18th, 2019.

01.02. – 18.08.2019.
