In the exhibition "Pattern and Decoration – Ornament as Promise" mumok presents the rich collection of works from this movement of Peter and Irene Ludwig. With oriental-style mosaics, monumental textile collages, paintings, installations, and performances, in the 1970s committed feminist artists like Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Kozloff, Valerie Jaudon, and Robert Kushner aimed to bring color, formal diversity, and emotion back into art. Decoration played a key role, with its connotations of the techniques of artisanship. Ornament as Promise was the premise of the Pattern and Decoration movement in the United States (1975–1985). Various ornamental traditions, from the Islamic world to North American Indians to Art Deco, were incorporated in their works, opening up a view beyond geographical and historical boundaries. A proximity to folk art was sought as a deliberate counter to the “purism” of the art of the 1960s. Curated by Manuela Ammer. 23.02. – 08.09.2019.

Die Ausstellung "Pattern and Decoration – Ornament als Versprechen" im mumok führt die reichen Bestände der Sammler_innen Peter und Irene Ludwig zur größten Präsentation von Pattern and Decoration im deutschsprachigen Raum seit den 1980er-Jahren zusammen. Ornament als Versprechen lautete die Prämisse der US-amerikanischen Pattern-and-Decoration-Bewegung (1975–1985). Mit orientalisch anmutenden Mosaiken, monumentalen Textilcollagen, Malereien, Installationen und Performances verfolgten feministisch engagierte Künstler_innen wie Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Kozloff, Valerie Jaudon oder Robert Kushner in den 1970er-Jahren das Ziel, Farbe, Formenvielfalt und Emotion in die Kunst zurückzuholen. Das Dekorative und ihm nahe kunsthandwerkliche Techniken spielten dabei eine große Rolle: Unterschiedliche ornamentale Traditionen – von islamisch über nordamerikanisch-indianisch bis Art déco – fanden in die Werke Eingang und öffneten den Blick über den geografischen und historischen Tellerrand hinaus. Christian Kosmas Mayer at mumok

For his solo exhibition "Aeviternity" at mumok, Christian Kosmas Mayer investigates the dynamic relations between living creatures and inanimate objects. The exhibited objects are witnesses of a frozen moment in time, in which mostly schematically distinct concepts of time such as the past, present, and future, or before and after, and life and death, meld into one. This exhibition explores the theme of conservation both as a natural and as an artificial process of archiving. This is undertaken in order to critically reevaluate history and the present by placing evolutionary and natural phenomena into the framework of cultural history and science. Mayer’s work focuses on critical exploration of questions of archiving and conserving as deliberate acts that create history. 23.02. to 16.06.019.


Für seine Einzelausstellung "Aeviternity" im mumok spürt Christian Kosmas Mayer den dynamischen Beziehungen zwischen lebendigen Wesen und unbelebten Dingen nach. Die ausgestellten Objekte sind Zeugen eines erstarrten Zeitflusses, in dem die meist schematisch voneinander abgetrennten Zeitbegriffe von Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft, von Vorher und Nachher, von Leben und Tod verschwimmen. Zentrale Bedeutung in seiner Arbeit besitzt die Auseinandersetzung mit Fragen des Archivierens und Konservierens als geschichtsbewusstem Handeln. Die Ausstellung thematisiert Konservierung sowohl als naturbedingten wie auch künstlich herstellbaren Prozess der Archivierung. 23.02. – 16.06.019.

Natural Histories at mumok

The exhibition Natural Histories. Traces of the Political at the mumok explores representations of nature in reference to social processes and historical events. Looking at various themes, these works show the mutual interrelations between nature and history beyond all idyllic idealization.
The presentation spans the period from the 1960s to the present, beginning with works of conceptual art that reflect on both the conditions of artistic production and reception and also their social dimensions and critiques of history. Artists of the next generation draw on the traditions of critiques of colonialism and of society, and transfer and update these into their own contemporary environments.
Depictions of nature also play a role in works that look at issues like genocide or internment, flight, and resistance in the context of totalitarian systems and military conflicts. A further theme is the transformation of public and historical places by natural processes. Nature claims everything back and becomes a sign of historical change. Sep 23rd, 2017 to Jan 14th, 2018.

Die Ausstellung Naturgeschichten. Spuren des Politischen im mumok befasst sich mit Darstellungen von Natur, die auf gesellschaftliche Prozesse und zeitgeschichtliche Ereignisse Bezug nehmen. In unterschiedlichen Themenfeldern verdeutlicht sie den Wechselbezug von Natur und Geschichte. Die Präsentation spannt einen Bogen von den 1960er-Jahren bis in die Gegenwart. Sie setzt mit Arbeiten konzeptueller Kunstrichtungen ein, die mit der Reflexion über die Rahmenbedingungen künstlerischer Produktion und Rezeption auch deren geschichtskritische Dimensionen thematisieren. Vertreter_innen der nachfolgenden Künstler_innengenerationen bedienen sich sowohl kolonialismuskritischer als auch gesellschaftskritischer Traditionen und aktualisieren diese in ihrem jeweiligen zeitgeschichtlichen Umfeld. Naturdarstellungen prägen auch Werke der Ausstellung, die sich mit Völkermord sowie mit Flucht und Widerstand im Rahmen totalitärer Systeme und kriegerischer Konflikte auseinandersetzen. Ein weiteres Themenfeld behandelt Veränderungen und Verwandlungen öffentlicher und historischer Orte durch natürliche Prozesse. Die alles überwuchernde Natur erweist sich dabei als Indikator geschichtlicher Dynamiken.

WOMAN FEMINIST AVANTGARDE OF THE 1970s at mumok

With WOMAN FEMINIST AVANTGARDE OF THE 1970s from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND Collection mumok is presenting the emancipation of women artists, who for the first time in the history of art began to create their own new and collective self-determined image of women in an art world dominated by men. The exhibition is divided into four sections: breaking out of one-dimensional role ascriptions as mother, housewife and wife, role-plays, the normativity of beauty, and female sexuality. On show are 300 works of the 1970s by 48 artists from Europe and North and South America. Many of the artists represented here moved away from the male-dominated genre of painting and turned to historically less predetermined media like photography, video, film, and performance.

Mit WOMAN FEMINISTISCHE AVANTGARDE der 1970er-Jahre mit Werken aus der SAMMLUNG VERBUND widmet sich das mumok einem der wichtigsten kunstgeschichtlichen Phänomene der 1970er-Jahre: dem Aufbruch weiblicher Künstlerinnen, die in einer von Männern bestimmten Kunstwelt erstmals in der Geschichte der Kunst kollektiv ein selbstbestimmtes neues Bild der Frau schufen. Die Ausstellung gliedert sich in vier Bereiche: das Aufbrechen eindimensionaler Rollenzuweisungen als Mutter, Haus- und Ehefrau, Rollenspiele, Normativität der Schönheit und weibliche Sexualität. Die Ausstellung zeigt 300 Werke aus den 1970er-Jahren von 48 Künstlerinnen aus Europa, Nord- und Südamerika. Viele der Künstlerinnen lösten sich von der männerdominierten Malerei und wendeten sich historisch „unbelasteten“ Medien wie Fotografie, Video, Film und der Performance zu. With rumors and murmurs mumok is presenting works by Martin Beck from the last ten years and also several new works made for the occasion. It includes sculptures, photographs, video works, drawings, books, and installations in the exhibition space that address questions of display and strategies of showing, memory, collectivity, and the themes of creating and finding images. Jakob Lena Knebl at mumok

Oh... Jakob Lena Knebl's new arrangement of the mumok collection of modernist and contemporary art is a free and creative selection combined with new own works. The artist has the courage to be eccentric and no interest in thinking in predefined categories, neither in her life nor in her art. Knebl focuses on classical modernism and the 1970s, an epoch of utopias, visions for society, and sexual experiments. The first of the two exhibition levels is devoted to a large installation, addressing constructs of identity, desire, and sensual experience. The second level of the exhibition links scenarios known from trade fairs and furniture and design shows with works from the mumok collection. Designed by Jakob Lena Knebl. Mit "Oh..." geht Jakob Lena Knebl die Neuaufstellung der Sammlung moderner und zeitgenössischer Kunst im mumok an, die sie gemeinsam mit eigenen, neu konzipierten Arbeiten und Mut zum Exzentrischen präsentiert. Auf Schubladendenken lässt sich die Künstlerin Jakob Lena Knebl dabei nicht ein, weder im Leben, noch in der Kunst. Knebl richtet ihr Interesse auf die klassische Moderne ebenso wie auf die 1970er-Jahre, eine Epoche der Utopien, gesellschaftlichen Visionen, aber auch sexuellen Experimente. Eine raumgreifende Installation, in der Identitätskonstruktionen, Begehren und sinnliche Erfahrung eine große Rolle spielen, bestimmt die erste Ausstellungsebene. Auf der zweiten Ebene werden Wohnlandschaften, wie man sie aus Messen und Schaustellungen kennt, mit den Werken der Sammlung so verwoben, dass die Felder Kunst, Design und Mode beständig ihre Positionen tauschen. In the exhibition Construction_Reflection, Works from the Collection Gertraud & Dieter Bogner at mumok the collectors Gertraud and Dieter Bogner present a selection of works from their own collection that they donated to mumok in 2007 and that has since been continually expanded. In this exhibition, the interplays between forms and contents, or the politics of form as content, are presented in a number of different interrelated thematic sections: painting and color, the reflection of history and society, and relations between architecture, sculpture, and abstraction in the tradition of a critical modernism. Body, Psyche, and Taboo at mumok

The mumok takes a fresh look at the Vienna Actionism by relating it to equally radical positions taken by some of its Austrian predecessors from the early twentieth century. This show is a presentation of both the intellectual and the formal links between Vienna Actionism and artistic developments in the early twentieth century. Works by the scandal artists of the 1960s, are compared and contrasted with pieces by their equally controversial colleagues working at the dawn of the twentieth century. The range of works includes iconic pieces of classical modernist art from the Leopold Museum, the Albertina, the Belvedere, the Austrian Theater Museum, the Vienna Museum, the Kokoschka Archive at the Vienna University of Applied Arts, the Friedrichhof Collection, and further loans from private collections in Austria. Die Präsentation macht ideengeschichtliche, inhaltliche und gestalterische Zusammenhänge zwischen dem Wiener Aktionismus und den künstlerischen Entwicklungen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts deutlich. With "to expose, to show, to demonstrate, to inform, to offer - Artistic Practices around 1990" mumok looks back at international art activities around 1990. On three levels installations, publications, objects, projects, films, and interventions by more than 50 artists and artists’ groups are shown, questioning traditional forms of exhibiting and addressing the pressing social challenges of their time. In the context of larger societal changes around 1990, artists increasingly discussed the social functions and base of their work. Reflecting on the conditions of artistic production and art’s presentation was, in various ways, intertwined with work on actual social issues. The status of the object of art and its economic foundation was a subject of contentious debate, as were the mechanisms of social exclusion, identity politics, and gender issues—and the AIDS crisis was reaching a pivotal point. In addition, the consequences of the fall of the Iron Curtain as well as a rapidly advancing globalization left their traces throughout. Das mumok blickt mit "to expose, to show, to demonstrate, to inform, to offer - Künstlerische Praktiken um 1990" auf das internationale Kunstgeschehen um 1990. Auf drei Ebenen werden Installationen, Publikationen, Objekte, Projekte, Filme und Interventionen von über 50 Künstler_innen und Künstler_innengruppen gezeigt. Sie alle stellten die herkömmlichen Formen des Ausstellens infrage und widmen sich den drängenden gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen ihrer Zeit. Vor dem Hintergrund großer gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen fand um 1990 eine Auseinandersetzung mit den sozialen Funktionen und Grundlagen künstlerischer Arbeit statt. Die Reflexion von künstlerischen Rahmenbedingungen und Ausstellungsfragen verschränkte sich dabei auf vielfache Weise mit der Bearbeitung konkreter gesellschaftlicher Anliegen. Es wurden der Objektstatus und die ökonomischen Bedingungen des Kunstwerks hinterfragt; soziale Ausschlussmechanismen wurden zu einem zentralen Thema; Identitäts- und Genderfragen wurden heftig diskutiert; und die AIDS-Krise steuerte ihrem Höhepunkt entgegen. Das KUNSTFORUM WIEN beleuchtet mit "Liebe in Zeiten der Revolution - Künstlerpaare der russischen Avantgarde" die russische Avantgarde unter einem neuen Aspekt: dem Künstlerpaar. Gleichberechtigte Produktions- und Lebensformen von Künstlern und Künstlerinnen im Kontext der Oktoberrevolution (1917) forcieren die Verflechtung von Kunst und Leben, Öffentlichem und Privatem. Die Tretjakow Galerie und das Staatliches Schtschusew-Museum für Architektur in Moskau sowie zahlreiche private Leihgeber unterstützen die Ausstellung mit zentralen Werken aus ihren Sammlungen. 14.10.2015 - 31.01.2016.

mumok presents a new selection of works of classical modernism from the mumok collection, which proves to be more diverse than past presentations have suggested. Alongside frequently shown positions such as André Derain, Oskar Kokoschka, and František Kupka, this selection also includes works by Béla Kádár, André Beaudin, Mathilde Flögl and Friedl Dicke and many more. Prosperous Poison/Blühendes Gift at mumok

Carte blanche for students in the Master in Critical Studies at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. mumok is devoting two levels to its collection of work since 1945. Five themes — Taking Pictures of the Boys, Imitating the Imitations of the Imitators, Love, Taking Care: Capitalistic Yoga and Anger Issues, and Schlachten Material Prothesen — form a visual puzzle of overlapping exhibitions that will provocatively highlight and disperse the themes inherent within the mumok collection. Für die Ausstellungszusammenstellung im mumok "Blühendes Gift – Zur feministischen Appropriation des österreichischen Unbewussten" erhielten die Studierenden des Programms Master in Critical Studies an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien eine „Carte Blanche“: Auf zwei Ebenen zeigt das mumok ihren Blick auf die Werke der Sammlung nach 1945. Vienna Actionism at mumok

With "My Body is the Event – Vienna Actionism and International Performance" mumok presents its collection of Vienna Actionism in the context of international developments in performance-based art. The focus of this exhibition is on the performative aspects of their creative work. Curated by Eva Badura-Triska with Marie-Therese Hochwartner. March 6th – August 23rd, 2015.

Ludwig Goes Pop at mumok

With "Ludwig Goes Pop" mumok is presenting the collection of the German industrialists Peter and Irene Ludwig. Around 100 works from six different institutions associated with the Ludwigs will be brought together. Peter and Irene Ludwig began to discover American Pop artists in the mid-1960s, they were interested in those artists who are today seen as the legendary protagonists of Pop Art: Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, and Andy Warhol. Their early sense for the significance of these works led to the largest Pop Art collection outside the USA. Curated by Susanne Neuburger. Feb 12th to Sep 13th, 2015.

Mit "Ludwig Goes Pop" zeigt das mumok die Sammlung des deutschen Industriellenpaars Peter und Irene Ludwig. In Überblicksausstellung werden rund 100 Werke aus sechs Häusern zusammengeführt, die mit dem Namen des deutschen Sammlerpaars verbunden sind. Peter und Irene Ludwig begannen Mitte der 1960er-Jahre die Kunst amerikanischer Pop-Art-KünstlerInnen für sich zu entdecken. Das Interesse des Ehepaars Ludwig galt jenen Künstlern, die heute als legendäre Protagonisten der Pop Art gelten: Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist und Andy Warhol. Claes Oldenburg's Mouse Museum

Oldenburg putted together an odd collection of kitsch, found objects, souvenirs, trivial everyday pieces and toys sometimes with a sexual connotation and humour plus material and prototyps for his art works. The Mouse Museum was first shown in 1972 at the documenta 5 in Kassel and then acquired by the Ludwig Collection and donated to the mumok. Later a seperate "Ray Gun" wing was added, also belonging to the mumok.

Claes Oldenburgs Mouse Museum ist ein Sammelsourium von Trivial- und Kitschobjekten, Fundstücke, Souvenirs, Altagsgegenständen und (Sex)-Spielzeug und sowie Material und Vormodelle, die Oldenburg für seine Kunstwerke verwendete, 385 Dinge die ihn zu seiner Arbeit inspirierten aber auch ein schwarzhumoristisches Miniaturabbild der Kapitalistischen Gesellschaft zeigen und Pop Art subsumieren.

COSIMA VON BONIN at mumok

With HIPPIES USE SIDE DOOR. THE YEAR 2014 HAS LOST THE PLOT. the mumok presents a large exhibition of works by Cosima von Bonin: more than 100 works, ranging from her earliest to completely new works and including longstanding colleagues and friends in her exhibition projects. For this exhibition the mumok facade gains a new balcony, with a vomiting Pinocchio figure standing on it. Curated by Karola Kraus. Oct 4th, 2014 to Jan 18th, 2015.

Das mumok präsentiert mit „HIPPIES USE SIDE DOOR. DAS JAHR 2014 HAT EIN RAD AB.“ eine umfassendste Retrospektive Cosima von Bonins: Über 100 Arbeiten von den künstlerischen Anfängen bis hin zu ganz neuen Arbeiten unter Einbeziehung langjähriger KollegInnen und FreundInnen. Josef Dabernig "Rock the Void" at mumok

For his exhibition „Rock the Void“ Josef Dabernig has designed an architecture at mumok that extends over three exhibition levels and by means of which he can place the different blocks of his work in relation to each other. His show will present Dabernig’s lists, his conceptual text works, and mathematically structured aluminum grids and panoramas of football stadiums, alongside film works, including his most recent film River Plate (2013), the film Hypercrisis (2011), and Wisla, Dabernig’s ode to soccer (1996). The ostentatious tidiness of this show is, however, again and again unsettled by many kinds of subtle irritation and anomaly. June 06, 2014 to September 14, 2014.

Für die sich über drei Ausstellungsebenen erstreckende Ausstellung „Rock the Void“ im mumok hat Josef Dabernik ein architektonisches Konzept entworfen, mit dem er seine künstlerischen Werkblöcke zueinander in Beziehung setzt. Er zeigt seine Listen, konzeptuellen Textarbeiten oder mathematisch strukturierten Aluminiumraster sowie Panoramen von Fußballstadien und zentrale filmische Werke, darunter sein neuester Film River Plate (2013), Hypercrisis (2011), und die Ode an den Fußball Wisla (1996). Die von ihm zur Schau gestellte Aufgeräumtheit wird durch subtile Irritationen und Ungereimtheiten aller Art immer wieder ins Wanken gebracht. A key part of Moyra Davey’s artistic work are her “mailers,” photographs folded as envelopes that she sends to family members, friends, and acquaintances. In her exhibition „Burn the Diaries“ at mumok Moyra Davey reflects in fragments of memory and quotations on her own past and relates it to Jean Genet, whose path she also traces in literary terms. Wesentlicher Bestandteil Moyra Daveys künstlerischen Arbeit sind die sogenannten Mailer, zu Umschlägen gefaltete Fotos, die sie per Post an Familienmitglieder, FreundInnen oder Bekannte schickt. mumok shows "Malerei" (paintings) by Albert Oehlen. This Retrospective not only contains genuine paintings but shows Oehlen's many different approaches to the process of painting thru his career and his ever evolving and changing perception of painting. Das mumok zeigt Albert Oehlen Malerei. Die Retrospektive zeigt die Auseinandersetzung Oehlens mit dem Begriff "Malerei", dass ihn im Laufe seiner Karriere zu immer wieder überraschenden radikalen Erweiterungen führt. Dieses auch punkig, rotzig, freche Überschreiten der traditionellen Grenzen des Genres macht auch beim Betrachten Spaß und wird in der Ausstellung von Kurator Achim Hochdörfer mit wunderbarer Leichtigkeit präsentiert. Franz West at MUMOK

Where is my Eight? The focus of the thematically structured presentation at the mumok is the Kombi- Werke [combi-works]. These are mainly installative works in which West repeatedly combined a number of individual pieces into new groups. The combination and recombination of various categories of works such as furniture, sculpture, Passstücke [adaptives], videos, or works on paper, from different creative periods, and the inclusion of works by other artists from his own collection show his conviction that the meaning of a statement – or a pictorial element – can never be fixed or clearly defined but is repeatedly (re)constituted depending on its context and the recipient. "Wo ist mein Achter?" Im Fokus der thematisch angelegten Präsentation im mumok stehen die Kombi-Werke, überwiegend installative Arbeiten, bei denen West mehrere Einzelstücke zusammengeführt und im Weiteren immer wieder neu gruppiert hat. Die Kombination und Rekombination verschiedener Werktypen wie Möbel, Skulpturen, Passstücke, Videos oder Arbeiten auf Papier aus allen Schaffensperioden und die Integration von Werken anderer Künstler aus Wests Sammlung entspricht seiner Überzeugung, dass die Bedeutung einer Äußerung – oder bildsprachlicher Elemente – nie eine fixe, klar definierte sein kann, sondern sich in Abhängigkeit von Kontext und RezipientIn immer wieder anders konstituiert.
