The Renate Bertlmann retrospective includes some two hundred exhibits, ranging from the late 1960s to her recent artistic production, including iconic works from the 1970s, sculptures and installations, performative photographs, and drawings, as well as numerous works that will be on view for the first time. Renate Bertlmann is one of the main protagonists of the Austrian feminist avant-garde. In recent years she has gained international attention, especially through her solo presentation at the Austrian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale 2019. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, the Belvedere honors her oeuvre with a first comprehensive retrospective. Bertlmann's radical, ironically provocative works subvert social attributions and stereotypes of gender, femininity, and masculinity, thus addressing the female body as a battlefield as well as the ambivalences of pleasure and pain, desire and discipline, tenderness and vulnerability. Die Renate Bertlmann Retrospektive umfasst rund zweihundert Exponate von den späten 1960er-Jahren bis zur jüngsten künstlerischen Produktion, darunter ikonische Werke aus den 1970er-Jahren, zentrale Skulpturen und Installationen, performative Fotografien und Zeichnungen, aber auch zahlreiche Arbeiten, die erstmals präsentiert werden. Renate Bertlmann ist eine der wesentlichen Protagonistinnen der österreichischen feministischen Avantgarde. In den letzten Jahren hat sie vor allem durch ihre Einzelpräsentation im österreichischen Pavillon auf der 58. Biennale di Venezia 2019 internationale Aufmerksamkeit erlangt. Anlässlich ihres achtzigsten Geburtstags würdigt das Belvedere ihr Œuvre mit einer ersten umfassenden Retrospektive. Bertlmanns radikale, ironisch-provokative Arbeiten unterwandern gesellschaftliche Zuschreibungen und Stereotype von Geschlecht, Weiblichkeit und Männlichkeit und adressieren dabei die Kampfzone des weiblichen Körpers ebenso wie Ambivalenzen von Lust und Schmerz, Begehren, Disziplinierung, Zärtlichkeit und Verwundbarkeit.
