Franz West at 21er Haus

With the exhibition Franz West – ARTISTCLUB the 21er Haus presents central works by the Austrian artist Franz West (1947–2012). The so-called ARTISTCLUB began as a participatory project started by West in 1999. Even though it did not achieve its desired form while the artist was alive, here it can be experienced as a curatorial idea in the sense of an interactive exhibition. The works on view were made by 36 different artists in collaboration with Franz West. The exhibition aims to reflect West’s concepts of art as a participatory act, viewer participation, the inclusion of various artistic positions via the process of collaboration, and the associated idea of authorship. Dec 14th,2016 to April 23rd, 2017.

Das 21er Haus zeigt in der Ausstellung Franz West – ARTISTCLUB zentrale Arbeiten des bedeutenden österreichischen Künstlers
Franz West (1947-2012). Der sogenannte ARTISTCLUB ist ein partizipatives Projekt von West aus dem Jahre 1999. Zu Lebzeiten des Künstlers konnte er nie in gewünschter Form umgesetzt werden, nun wird er als kuratorische Idee im Sinne einer interaktiven Ausstellung erfahrbar. Die ausgestellten Werke von 36 Künstlerinnen und Künstlern sind alle in Kooperation mit Franz West entstanden. Die Besucher sind dazu eingeladen, selbst Teil des Kunstwerks zu werden. In Wests Kunstschaffen spielen die Partizipation des Betrachters und die Kollaboration mit anderen Künstlern eine zentrale Rolle. Das Verhältnis zwischen dem Künstler, der künstlerischen Arbeit und dem Rezipienten wird von ihm stets hinterfragt. 14. Dez. 2016 bis 23. April 2017.

Where is my Eight? The focus of the thematically structured presentation at the mumok is the Kombi- Werke [combi-works]. These are mainly installative works in which West repeatedly combined a number of individual pieces into new groups. The combination and recombination of various categories of works such as furniture, sculpture, Passstücke [adaptives], videos, or works on paper, from different creative periods, and the inclusion of works by other artists from his own collection show his conviction that the meaning of a statement – or a pictorial element – can never be fixed or clearly defined but is repeatedly (re)constituted depending on its context and the recipient. Feb 23, until May 05, 2013.

"Wo ist mein Achter?" Im Fokus der thematisch angelegten Präsentation im mumok stehen die Kombi-Werke, überwiegend installative Arbeiten, bei denen West mehrere Einzelstücke zusammengeführt und im Weiteren immer wieder neu gruppiert hat. Die Kombination und Rekombination verschiedener Werktypen wie Möbel, Skulpturen, Passstücke, Videos oder Arbeiten auf Papier aus allen Schaffensperioden und die Integration von Werken anderer Künstler aus Wests Sammlung entspricht seiner Überzeugung, dass die Bedeutung einer Äußerung – oder bildsprachlicher Elemente – nie eine fixe, klar definierte sein kann, sondern sich in Abhängigkeit von Kontext und RezipientIn immer wieder anders konstituiert. During most of the talk Franz West was hidden from the lookers on behind a wall. At the end Heinrich Dunst reads the poem "franz" by Konrad Bayer from 1958.

Janda presents furniture by Joe Scanlan, Clemens Wolf has a one man show "Holes n' Grids" at Steinek. All shows are running till Oct 29, 2011.
