Laura Owens and Cao Fei at SECESSION

At the main hall the SECESSION presents paintings by LAURA OWENS. Laura Owens, born in Euclid, Ohio (USA) in 1970, lives and works in Los Angeles. The conjunction of digitally manipulated graphical elements and the analog technique of silkscreen printing has emerged as a major theme in her art and brought a new look to her art that is also the dominant aspect of the most recent series of paintings, produced specifically for her show at the Secession. She also shows a series of handmade artists’ books created in connection with her work on the large paintings. Curator: Bettina Spörr.

CAO FEI is one of the most outstanding Chinese artists today. For her exhibition at the Vienna Secession, Cao Fei has produced four complex new pieces, which are on display along with five selected key works. The outdoor installation Splendid River (2015) addresses the relationship between original and replica. In her video installation Strangers (2015), Cao Fei uses an online dating platform as a space for small, performative interventions. In her video Cosplayers (2004), the protagonists are young people who, dressed as their favorite characters from video games, stage (fantasy) plots in the urban surroundings. Haze and Fog (2013) portrays residents and service workers in a modern apartment building living alienated from one another. In the installation Rumba (2015) household robots perform a kind of random choreography. Curator: Jeanette Pacher. July 2nd to Aug 30th, 2015

Kuratorin: Jeanette Pacher. 02.07 - 30.08.2015
