THE POLAROID PROJECT at WESTLICHT

THE POLAROID PROJECT at WESTLICHT presents some 200 Polaroids ranging from the well-known SX-70 snapshot with its large frame (8.8×10.7 cm) to the fascinatingly detailed 20×24-inch large format (50×60 cm) by nearly 100 photographers. For the first time the exhibition explores the Polaroid phenomenon at the intersection of art and technology in its full scope. Outstanding artists — from Ansel Adams to Andy Warhol — seized the medium of instant photography to strike new paths and came to define the aesthetics of an era. The Polaroid Project combines their unique creations with ground-breaking technology—camera specimen, concept studies and prototypes—which made this visual revolution possible in the first place. Vienna, which since 2010 is the new home of the International Polaroid Collection thanks to the initiative of WestLicht founder Peter Coeln, is the first stop of the exhibition in Europe. 18.11.2017–25.02.2018.

With Polaroids by Nobuyoshi Araki, Sibylle Bergemann, Anna & Bernhard Blume, Guy Bourdin, Ellen Carey, Helen Chadwick, Chuck Close, Marie Cosindas, Barbara Crane, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Joan Fontcuberta, Toto Frima, Luigi Ghirri, Richard Hamilton, Robert Heinecken, Gottfried Helnwein, Jan Hnizdo, David Hockney, Barbara Kasten, David Levinthal, Ulrich Mack, Robert Mapplethorpe, James Nitsch, Robert Rauschenberg, Lucas Samaras, Fazal Sheikh, William Wegman, Erwin Wurm and many more.

18.11.2017–25.02.2018.

Aging Pride/Die Kraft des Alters at BELVEDERE

In the show 'Aging Pride' at the Lower Belvedere, curator Sabine Fellner demonstrates how artists have succeeded in differently perceiving the possibilities and limitations of age while transcending exaltation and pessimism. In the presented works, artists illustrate how age in all of its facets can be thoughtfully integrated into our lives. Aside from negative stereotypes in the public eye, where the aging process is seen as a deficiency, age also indicates power, experience, wisdom, contemplation, lust for life, and triumph over societal conventions. Aging is not only a biological process but a cultural construction, which emerging sciences such as cultural gerontology have dedicated themselves to investigating. Nov 17th, 2017 to March 4th, 2018.

Artists: Gustinus Ambrosi, Tina Barney, Pina Bausch, Renate Bertlmann, Herbert Boeckl, Eva Brunner-Szabo, Aleah Chapin, Heinz Cibulka, John Coplans, Lovis Corinth, Edgar Degas, Carola Dertnig, Ines Doujak, Sepp Dreissinger, Barbara Eichhorn, Titanilla Eisenhart, Michael Endlicher, James Ensor, Eric Fischl, Josef Floch, Greta Freist, Lucian Freud, Adolf Frohner, Friedl vom Gröller, George Grosz, Johannes Grützke, Ernst Haas, Barbara Klemm, Heidi Harsieber, Felix Albrecht Harta, Karl Hofer, Edgar Honetschläger, Alfred Hrdlicka, Bernadette Huber, Franz Hubmann, Regina Hügli, Ishiuchi Miyako, Konstantin Jatropulus, Birgit Jürgenssen, Alex Katz, Josef Kern, Anastasia Khoroshilova, Gustav Klimt, Herlinde Koelbl, Oskar Kokoschka, Anton Kolig, Broncia Koller-Pinell, Käthe Kollwitz, Nikolaus Korab, NINA Kovacheva, Brigitte Kowanz, Karoline Kubin, Maria Lassnig, Annie Leibovitz, Erich Lessing, Max Liebermann, Karin Mack, Karl Mediz, Elfriede Mejchar, Duane Michals, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Inge Morath, Marie Louise von Motesiczky, Ron Mueck, Shirin Neshat, Roman Opałka, Hans Op de Beeck, Max Oppenheimer, Martin Parr, Ewa Partum, Pablo Picasso, Margot Pilz, Arnulf Rainer, Paula Rego, Carl Anton Reichel, Elisabeth von Samsonow, Egon Schiele, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Claudia Schumann, Fritz Schwarz-Waldegg, Joan Semmel, Elfie Semotan, Fritz Simak, Kiki Smith, Annegret Soltau, Margherita Spiluttini, Elsa Spitzer, Daniel Spoerri, Evelin Stermitz, Karl Sterrer, Superflux, Fiona Tan, Juergen Teller, Joyce Tenneson, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Rosemarie Trockel, Spencer Tunick, Christine Turnauer, Nurith Wagner-Strauß, Jeff Wall, Josef Wawra, Harry Weber, Max Weiler, Todd Weinstein, Nives Widauer, Martha Wilson and Herwig Zens

Florian Hecker at Kunsthalle Wien

For Florian Hecker's 'Hallucination, Perspective, Synthesis' the exhibition space of Kunsthalle Wien transforms into a performative, resonating space and stage for sound events that withdraw from linguistic description and categorization. Hecker uses synthetic sounds and the listener’s auditory process to create acoustic spaces of experience. His computer-generated compositions dramatize psychoacoustics as well as objective-physical stimuli and their individual, psychic and physical impacts. Multichannel installations unfold a sculptural presence that shakes the idea of a coherent, continuous world of identifiable coordinates and points of reference. Curator: Vanessa Joan Müller. Nov 17th, 2017 to Jan 14th, 2018.

Art into Life!, Collector Wolfgang Hahn and the 60s at mumok

In the exhibition Art into Life! Collector Wolfgang Hahn and the 60s, mumok presents the major works from the Hahn Collection. Hahn was one of the first collectors of nouveau réalisme, Fluxus, and new music works in the Rhineland. In 1978 his collection of around 400 works came to Vienna, where it is now one of mumok’s key collections. All the works shown in this exhibition, beginning with Door by Joseph Beuys and ending with Wolf Vostell‘s action objects, are indebted to an expanded concept of art. Happenings, actions, and performances of new music are well represented, with works by Allan Kaprow, Nam June Paik, and John Cage. Prominent works of Pop art by George Segal, Claes Oldenburg, and Tom Wesselman enter into dialogue with material images from nouveau réalisme, which is a focus of the Hahn Collection, including works by Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, and Niki de Saint Phalle. Curated by Susanne Neuburger (mumok) and Barbara Engelbach (Museum Ludwig Köln). Nov 11th, 2017 to June 24th, 2018.

Julian Turner. at mumok

Julian Turner, born in 1985 in Hamburg, is the winner of the Kapsch Contemporary Art Prize 2017. In his first museum exhibition, warum nicht, at the mumok, Turner explores the concept of the display – presentation forms used in museums and elsewhere – as well as various collecting processes. How do we collect, what do we collect, and why do we collect? Or perhaps the question is why not? How do we present our collections? Or why not? “Planned imperfection” is at the heart of Turner’s multimedia works, in which he cites and humorously challenges the conventions of the art business. Curated by Marianne Dobner. Nov 10th, 2017 to Match 11th, 2018.
