Hundertwasser – Schiele at Leopold Mueum

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928–2000) shaped 20th-century art beyond the borders of Austria as a painter, designer of living spaces and pioneer of the environmental movement. His life-long, intense exploration of the personality and oeuvre of Egon Schiele (1890–1918) is largely unknown. 20 years after Hundertwasser’s death, the Leopold Museum is dedicating the exhibition "Imagine Tomorrow", conceived as a dialogue between him and Egon Schiele with some 170 exhibits. At the age of 20, when he was a student at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, the artist discovered Viennese Modernism through exhibitions and books: Schiele, especially, would later become a central point of reference for the internationally active artist. Hundertwasser honed his draftsmanship by studying Schiele’s drawings, successfully propagated Schiele’s art amongst his fellow artists in Paris, and in 1965 gave one of his works the title 622 Mourning Egon Schiele. The exhibition focusses on central motifs and themes in the works of both artists, such as ensouled nature and the relationship between the individual and society, the exhibition illustrates analogies in their oeuvres that go beyond formal similarities. 21.02.2020 – 31.08.2020

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928–2000) prägte als Maler, Gestalter von Lebensräumen und Vorkämpfer der Ökologiebewegung die Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts über die Grenzen Österreichs hinaus. Wenig bekannt ist seine lebenslange, intensive Beschäftigung mit der Person und dem Werk Egon Schieles (1890–1918). 20 Jahre nach Hundertwassers Tod, widmet das Leopold Museum diesen beiden ikonischen Künstlern eine rund 170 Exponate mit "Imagine Tomorrow" eine umfassende dialogisch angelegte Schau. Als 20-jähriger entdeckte der damalige Akademiestudent in Ausstellungen und Büchern die Kunst der Wiener Moderne für sich: Vor allem Schiele sollte in den folgenden Jahren eine zentrale Bezugsfigur für den international agierenden Künstler werden. Sein zeichnerisches Können schulte er im Selbststudium von dessen Zeichnungen, in Paris propagierte er gegenüber seinen Künstlerkollegen effektiv Schieles Kunst, und 1965 betitelte er ein Werk mit 622 Der Nasenbohrer und die Beweinung Egon Schieles. Entlang zentraler Motiv-und Themenkomplexe im Werk beider Künstler wie jener der beseelten Natur oder dem Verhältnis von Individuum und Gesellschaft werden Analogien jenseits von formalen Ähnlichkeiten ersichtlich. 21.02.2020 – 31.08.2020.

GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM at Leopold Museum

With the exhibition GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM curated by Ivan Ristić, the Leopold Museum is presenting some 120 exhibits from the Swiss Braglia Collection and the German Johenning Collection for the first time in Vienna, among them works by Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, Marianne von Werefkin, August Macke and Franz Marc, as well as Paula Modersohn-Becker, Paul Klee and Lionel Feininger. At the beginning of the 20th century, emotion became a stylistic device; to observe meant to feel. Driven by instinct and in opposition to academic canons, young rebels from the Dresden artist community “Die Brücke” brought landscapes of the soul onto the canvas. In revolt against industrialized society and its conventions, they also sought a nature-based reformation of life. Meanwhile, the circle of editors responsible for the Munich almanac “Der Blaue Reiter” [The Blue Rider] went in search of a new inwardness in art, which allowed for the purely intuitive as much as for cultivated reason. Das Leopold Museum zeigt in der von Ivan Ristić kuratierten Ausstellung DEUTSCHER EXPRESSIONISMUS rund 120 Exponate aus der Schweizer Sammlung Braglia und der deutschen Sammlung Johenning erstmals in Wien, darunter Werke von Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, Marianne von Werefkin, August Macke und Franz Marc, wie auch von Paula Modersohn-Becker, Paul Klee und Lionel Feininger. In Auflehnung gegen die industrialisierte Gesellschaft und ihre Konventionen strebten sie zudem eine naturbezogene Lebensreform an. Währenddessen begab sich der Umkreis der Herausgeber des Münchner Almanachs Der Blaue Reiter auf die Suche nach einer neuen Innerlichkeit in der Kunst, die das rein Intuitive wie auch die kultivierte Vernunft gelten ließ. 15.11.2019 bis 20.04.2020.

Richard Gerstl at Leopold Museum

The Leopold Museum is dedicating an exhibition to Richard Gerstl (1883-1908) based around the eminent works from the museum’s own collection. Gerstl is considered the first Austrian Expressionist who created an oeuvre full of stylistic innovations even before Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. With his abstracting-gestural manner of painting and the stylistic heterogeneity of his work, he broke with the conventions of his time. The presentation provides an unprecedented exploration of Gerstl’s connections to his contemporaries and role models, as well as to artists of the present. His expressive manner of painting, which would lead the artist all the way to a dissolution of forms, may have been inspired by the works of Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard and Lovis Corinth. Gerstl, in turn, provided inspiration to a whole range of artists, who especially admire his Expressionist late oeuvre, including Martha Jungwirth, Georg Baselitz and Paul McCarthy. This contextualization of Gerstl’s oeuvre within the art of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries links the past with the present. The exhibition curated by Diethard Leopold and Hans-Peter Wipplinger is created in cooperation with the Kunsthaus Zug. Sep. 27th, 2019 to Jan. 20th, 2020.

Das Leopold Museum widmet Richard Gerstl (1883-1908) eine umfassende Präsentation, die auf den hervorragenden Werken der eigenen Sammlung aufbaut. Gerstl gilt als der erste österreichische Expressionist, der noch vor Egon Schiele und Oskar Kokoschka ein Œuvre voller stilistischer Neuerungen schuf. Seine Werke brachen in ihrer abstrahierend-gestischen Manier und stilistischen Heterogenität mit den Konventionen der Zeit. Erstmals wird eine vertiefende Auseinandersetzung mit Vorbildern und Zeitgenossen Gerstls sowie Künstlerinnen und Künstlern der Gegenwart angestrebt. Mögliche Anregungen für seine ausdrucksstarke Malweise, die ihn bis an die Formauflösung führen sollten, sind in den Werken von Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard oder Lovis Corinth zu finden. Demgegenüber reicht der Bogen jener Kunstschaffenden, die bis heute vor allem Gerstls expressionistisches Spätwerk bewundern, von Martha Jungwirth über Georg Baselitz bis hin zu Paul McCarthy. Durch die Kontextualisierung von Gerstls Œuvre innerhalb der Kunst des 19., 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts werden Vergangenheit und Gegenwart miteinander kurzgeschlossen. Moriz Nähr at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

MORIZ NÄHR – Photographer of Viennese Modernism at LEOPOLD MUSEUM. Moriz Nähr (1859–1945) was one of the most important innovators of photography in “Vienna around 1900”. Nähr enjoyed a life-long artist’s friendship with Gustav Klimt and was connected with the artist through a special network of eminent personalities from the arts, culture and philosophy. Numerous portrait photographs of Klimt emphatically document the two artists’ bond. Klimt was also inspired by Nähr’s photographic motifs, as illustrated by the conformities in the photographer’s pictures and Klimt’s painting Beech Forest I created in 1902. The legends surrounding Moriz Nähr are based on the one hand on his close ties with Gustav Klimt and the Vienna Secession and on the other hand on his connections with the family of Ludwig Wittgenstein and the imperial Habsburg family, especially with the heir to the throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who appointed him court photographer in 1908. He has left behind a multi-faceted oeuvre comprising not only landscape-, architecture-, and portrait photography but also street photography (Scenes from the Naschmarkt, 1918) as well as photographs documenting exhibitions (Vienna Secession). 24.08.2018 – 29.10.2018.

MORIZ NÄHR – Fotograf der Wiener Moderne at LEOPOLD MUSEUM. Moriz Nähr (1859–1945) gilt als einer der wichtigsten Erneuerer in der Fotografie im „Wien um 1900“. Mit dem Jugendstilmaler Gustav Klimt verband Nähr eine lebenslange Künstlerfreundschaft und ein besonderes Netzwerk prominenter Persönlichkeiten aus Kunst, Kultur und Philosophie. Zahlreiche Porträtaufnahmen von Klimt dokumentieren die künstlerische Verbundenheit eindrücklich. Umgekehrt ließ sich auch Klimt von den fotografischen Motiven Nährs inspirieren, wie die Übereinstimmung im Gemälde Buchenwald I von 1902 verdeutlicht. Die Legendenbildung um Moriz Nähr basiert einerseits auf der engen Verbindung zu Gustav Klimt und der Wiener Secession und andererseits auf seiner Beziehung zur Familie Ludwig Wittgensteins und dem habsburgischen Kaiserhaus, speziell zum Thronfolger Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand, zu dessen Kammerfotograf er 1908 ernannt wurde. Von Nähr hat sich ein vielschichtiges Oeuvre erhalten, das Landschafts- Architektur-, Porträtfotografie umfasst, und sich zudem der Street Photography (Naschmarktszenen, 1918) und Ausstellungsdokumentation (Wiener Secession) zuordnen lässt. 24.08.2018 – 29.10.2018.

Madam d'Ora at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

"Make me look beautiful, Madame d'Ora!" at LEOPOLD MUSEUM. In 1907 Dora Kallmus was one of the first women in Vienna to open a photographic studio. Within only a few months, the Atelier d’Ora had established itself as the most elegant and renowned studio for artistic portrait photographs and her images were widely disseminated through numerous newspapers and magazines in Austria and abroad. The first artist photographed by her was Gustav Klimt in 1908. In 1925 an offer from the fashion magazine L’Officiel brought d’Ora to Paris, which became the center of her personal and professional life. She portait Coco Chanel, Josephine Baker, Marc Chagall, Maurice Chevalier and 1956 Pablo Picasso and received countless commissions from fashion- and lifestyle magazines, which only started to abate from the mid-1930s when the political situation across Europe became increasingly precarious. A disenfranchised Jew, d’Ora lost her Paris studio in 1940 and for years had to hide from German occupying forces in France. Having narrowly escaped capture, the portraitist of society focused her at once sharp and empathic gaze after 1945 also on nameless concentration camp survivors as well as on the meat stock of the Parisian abattoirs. D’Ora’s work traces a unique arc from the last Austrian monarch, via the glamour of the Paris fashion world in the 1920s and 30s to a Europe entirely changed after World War II. The exhibition is created in cooperation with the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg and the Photoinstitut Bonartes in Vienna and is curated by Monika Faber and Magdalena Vukovic. 13.07.2018 – 29.10.2018.

"Machen Sie mich schön, Madame d'Ora!" im LEOPOLD MUSEUM. Im Jahr 1907 eröffnete Dora Kallmus’ als eine der ersten Frauen in Wien ein Fotostudio. Innerhalb weniger Monate galt das Atelier d’Ora als eleganteste und renommierteste Adresse für das künstlerische Porträt. Der erste Künstler, den sie fotografierte, war 1908 Gustav Klimt. Ihre Aufnahmen fanden in zahlreichen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften im In- und Ausland weite Verbreitung. Im Jahr 1925 brachte ein Angebot des Modemagazins L’Officiel d’Ora nach Paris, das fortan ihr Lebens- und Arbeitsmittelpunkt sein sollte. Sie fotografierte Coco Chanel, Josephine Baker, Marc Chagall, Maurice Chevalier und 1956 Pablo Picasso. Zahllosen Aufträge für Mode- und Lifestylezeitschriften folgten, die erst Mitte der 1930er-Jahre abebbten, als die politische Lage in Europa zunehmend prekärer wurde. Als entrechtete Jüdin verlor d’Ora 1940 ihr Atelier in Paris und musste sie sich jahrelang vor den deutschen Besatzungssoldaten in Frankreich versteckt halten. Gerade noch davongekommen, richtete die Gesellschaftsporträtistin nach 1945 ihren zugleich scharfen und einfühlsamen Blick auch auf die namenlosen Heimkehrer aus den Konzentrationslagern und auf das Schlachtvieh der Pariser abattoirs. D’Oras Werk spannt einen einzigartigen Bogen von der Repräsentation des letzten österreichischen Monarchen, über den Glamour der Pariser Modewelt der 1920er- und 1930er-Jahre bis hin zu einem gänzlich veränderten Europa nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Gustav Klimt at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

The Leopold Museum is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to the “artist of the century” Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) during 2018’s commemorative year of Viennese Modernism. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Klimt’s death, the presentation retraces his artistic transformation from a painter espousing late historicism to becoming the most eminent exponent of the Vienna Secession. The presentation curated by Hans-Peter Wipplinger in collaboration with Sandra Tretter features works from the collections of the Leopold Museum and the Leopold Private Collection, exhibits from the Klimt Foundation, new works given to the Leopold Museum by a Klimt descendant as a permanent loan, as well as select loans from Austrian and international collections. 22.06.2018 – 04.11.2018.

Zoran Mušič at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

The exhibition "Zoran Mušič – Poetry of Silence" at the LEOPOLD MUSEUM features more than 160 works from all periods of his oeuvre. Zoran Mušič (1909–2005) had already been an established Slovenian artist by the time he was deported to Dachau concentration camp for several month in late 1944. The drawings he created there are harrowing documents of that time. After the War, the artist moved to Venice and Paris, where he lived for long periods of time. The inextinguishable trauma of his experience at the concentration camp was processed by the artist in his 1970 picture cycle We Are Not the Last. These unsparing visions of horror were followed by atmospheric renderings from Mušič’s adopted Venetian home as well as by numerous self-portraits painted using muted colors. 13.04.2018 – 06.08.2018.

Das LEOPOLD MUSEUM zeigt in der Ausstellung "Zoran Mušič – Poesie der Stille" über 160 Werke aus allen Schaffensphasen des stillen Einzelgängers. Zoran Mušič (1909–2005) zählte bereits zu den arrivierten slowenischen Malern, als er Ende 1944 für mehrere Monate ins Konzentrationslager Dachau verschleppt wurde. Zeichnungen, die dort entstanden, wurden zu erschütternden Zeitdokumenten. In der Nachkriegszeit ließ sich der Maler in Venedig und Paris nieder, wo er über längere Perioden hinweg lebte. Das unauslöschliche Trauma der KZ-Erfahrung verarbeitete der Maler abermals ab 1970 im Bilderzyklus Wir sind nicht die Letzten. Diesen schonungslosen Visionen des Schreckens folgten Stimmungsbilder aus Mušičs venezianischer Wahlheimat sowie zahlreiche in gedämpften Tönen gemalte Selbstbildnisse. 13.04.2018 – 06.08.2018

The retrospective Anton Romako – The Beginning of Modernism at the Leopold Museum will showcase outstanding works from the oeuvre of this artist who opened up new painterly possibilities of interpreting the visible world in a visionary and intuitive manner. Trained as a history painter in Munich and Vienna, Romako made a name for himself over two decades as a famous portraitist and eminent genre painter in Rome. Following his separation from his wife, the artist returned to Vienna in 1875 and executed works whose idiosyncratic combination of expressive lines and free painterly brushwork overtaxed his generation’s understanding of art. 06.04. – 18.06.2018.

Die Retrospektive Anton – Beginn der Moderne im Leopold Museum präsentiert herausragende Werke aus dem OEuvre dieses ungewöhnlichen Malers. Ausgebildet als Historienmaler in München und Wien erwarb sich Romako in Rom innerhalb zweier Jahrzehnte Ruhm und Anerkennung als Porträtist und hervorragender Genremaler. Nach der Trennung seiner Frau 1875 kehrte er nach Wien zurück und vollendete nun Werke, deren eigenwillige Kombination von ausdrucksstarker Linie und freier malerischer Pinselführung das Verständnis seiner Zeit überforderte. 06.04. – 18.06.2018.

Ferdinand Hodler at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

This exhibition 'Ferdinand Hodler – Elective Affinities from Klimt to Schiele' at the Leopold Museum is the most comprehensive retrospective of works by Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918) in Austria since the 1904 Secession exhibition. An exponent of Symbolism and Jugendstil, a pioneer of Expressionism, and not least an innovator of monumental painting, Hodler was an important inspiration to numerous artists of Viennese Modernism, such as Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser, as well as Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele. The presentation focuses on the three main themes of Hodler’s art: landscapes from plein air painting to abstraction, portraits with an emphasis on female depictions, self-portraits, the haunting series of works accompanying the death of his lover Valentine Godé-Darel, as well as his eminent Symbolist figural compositions. Das Leopold Museum präsentiert mit "Ferdinand – Hodler Wahlverwandtschaften von Klimt bis Schiele" die umfangreichste Retrospektive zu Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918) in Österreich seit der Secessionsausstellung 1904. Als Exponent von Symbolismus und Jugendstil, als Wegbereiter des Expressionismus und nicht zuletzt als Erneuerer der Monumentalmalerei, war Hodler wichtiger Impulsgeber für zahlreiche Künstler der Wiener Moderne wie Gustav Klimt und Koloman Moser, aber auch Oskar Kokoschka und Egon Schiele. Traces of Time/Spuren der Zeit at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

The exhibition >>Traces of Time<< at LEOPOLD MUSEUM focuses on contemporary artistic strategies dedicated to exploring and questioning visual culture. Their emphasis is on the construction of visual aspects in art, photography and architecture, as well as in everyday objects. The research-based approach of these artists, who draw on historical documents and visual forms, revolves around the question of how historical documents show something rather than on what they show, and which functions are linked to this in the discourse of knowledge. Thus, their works can be regarded as a type of documentary practice. The featured works show that rather than merely establishing facts, documentation is now characterized by an open-mindedness that focuses on the construction of perception and culture. Ihr Augenmerk liegt auf der Konstruktion des Visuellen in Kunst, Fotografie, Architektur oder Gebrauchsgegenständen des Alltags. Das recherchebasierte, auf historische Dokumente und visuelle Formen zurückgreifende Vorgehen der KünstlerInnen kreist hierbei nicht um die Frage „was“, sondern „wie“ kulturelle Dokumente etwas zeigen und welche Funktionen im Wissensdiskurs damit verbunden sind. Ihre Arbeiten können daher als Form einer dokumentarischen Praxis angesehen werden. Das Dokumentarische offenbart sich jedoch nicht mehr als ein Festschreiben von Fakten, sondern ist von einer Offenheit geprägt, welche die Konstruktion von Wahrnehmung und Kultur in den Fokus rückt. 20.10.2017 – 26.02.2018.

Anton Kolig at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

The Anton Kolig presentation at the LEOPOLD MUSEUM, the first to be held in Vienna in over 50 years, features some 60 paintings and 50 works on paper by Kolig. Anton Kolig (1886–1950), a prominent representative of a dynamic figural painting typical of his time, is among the most eminent Austrian painters from the first half of the 20th century. With more than 20 paintings the Leopold Museum houses the most comprehensive collection of works by the artist in a museum. This first video shows the paintings, the second one shows the drawings. Die Anton Kolig Ausstellung im LEOPOLD MUSEUM ist nach über fünfzig Jahren die erste große Personale, die zum Werk von Anton Kolig in Wien stattfindet. Anton Kolig (1886–1950), ein exponierter Vertreter einer für seine Zeit vielfach typischen dynamisierten figuralen Malerei, zählt zu den bedeutendsten Malern in Österreich in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Ausstellung umfasst insgesamt rund 60 Gemälde und 50 Arbeiten auf Papier. Das Leopold Museum verfügt mit über 20 Gemälden über den umfangreichsten musealen Bestand von Werken dieses Künstlers. Joannis Avramidis at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

A year after Joannis Avramidis' (1922–2016) death, the Leopold Museum presents the largest retrospective exhibition of his work in Austria. Seeking a consolidation of the figural coupled with an abstractness of form, Avramidis oriented himself on Greek archaic and classical sculpture as well as on artists such as Hans von Marées, Constantin Brancusi and Wilhelm Lehmbruck. This led him to a highly autonomous style described by Werner Hofmann as “rhythm of severity”. May 19th to Sep 4th, 2017.

Ein Jahr nach dem Tod von Joannis Avramidis (1922–2016) präsentiert das Leopold Museum seine bisher größte Retrospektive in Österreich. In seiner Suche nach einer Verdichtung des Figürlichen bei gleichzeitiger Abstraktheit der Form orientierte sich Avramidis an der griechisch archaischen und klassischen Skulptur ebenso, wie er sich von Künstlern wie Hans von Marées, Constantin Brancusi oder Wilhelm Lehmbruck inspirieren ließ. Carl Spitzweg, Erwin Wurm at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

Some 130 years after Carl Spitzweg's death, the Leopold Museum is dedicating the first comprehensive exhibition in Austria complemented by works created by the Austrian sculptor and photographic artist Erwin Wurm. The German artist Spitzweg (1808–1885) was a humorous and critical analyst of his time whose ironic works depict petit bourgeois and odd characters within their illusory Biedermeier world. The juxtaposition of the two artists’ works illustrates how they both deploy humor in order to analyze their respective eras in a critical manner. Curator: Hans-Peter Wipplinger. Rund 130 Jahre nach seinem Tod präsentiert das Leopold Museum Carl Spitzweg in seiner ersten umfassenden Ausstellung in Österreich, gemeinsam mit Werken des österreichischen Bildhauers und Fotokünstlers Erwin Wurm. Dabei wird evident, dass beide Künstler eine kritische Reflexion ihrer Zeit mit den Mitteln des Humors in ihren Arbeiten praktizieren. Der deutsche Künstler Spitzweg (1808–1885) gilt als humorvoller Zeitkritiker, der in seinen ironischen Arbeiten die damaligen Spießbürger und Sonderlinge in ihrer biedermeierlichen Scheinwelt widerspiegelt. The Poetics of the Material at LEOPLD MUSEUM

What the works assembled in the exhibition "The Poetics of the Material" at LEOPOLD MUSEUM have in common is the utilization of found objects, everyday items and “non-art” materials, which are called into question as bearers of cultural meanings. Incorporated into the structure of these artworks, primarily sculptures and installations, the aesthetics and historical significance of these objects and materials are revealed as well as their semantic content is analyzed – and this often in terms of a playful interaction of material and language.

Gemeinsam ist den Arbeiten in der Ausstellung "Poetiken des Materials" im LEOPOLD MUSEUM der Einsatz vorgefundener Objekte, Alltagsgegenstände und „kunstfremder“ Materialien. Diese werden als Träger kultureller Bedeutungsgehalte hinterfragt. Theodor von Hörmann at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

The Leopold Museum presents the first comprehensive exhibition on the Austrian artist Theodor von Hörmann (1840–1895), tracing his path from Realist to Impressionist through select works. During a stay in France between 1886 and 1890 he studied the Barbizon painters, the then still controversial Impressionists, and the representatives of the School of Tervuren. After his return from France he derived crucial impetus from German Impressionists and was introduced to the Secessionist ideas and would subsequently become an ardent advocate of this movement and a founding member of the Viennese Secession. His early death in 1895 prevented him from taking the final step into Modernism. Curated by Marianne Hussl-Hörmann. April 29th to Aug 29th, 2016.

Das Leopold Museum zeigt eine umfassende Ausstellung des österreichischen Künstlers Theodor von Hörmann (1840–1895), die anhand ausgewählter Werke seinen Weg vom Realisten zum Impressionisten nachvollziehbar macht. Im Zuge seines Frankreichaufenthaltes von 1886 bis 1890 studierte er die Maler von Barbizon, die damals noch umstrittenen Impressionisten, und setzte sich mit den belgischen Vertretern der Schule von Tervueren auseinander. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus Frankreich führte ihn sein Weg auch nach München und Dachau, wo er mit deutschen Impressionisten und deren secessionistischen Ideen bekannt und in Folge zu einem vehementen Vertreter dieser Bewegung wurde. Er war an der Gründung der Secession in Wien beteiligt , sein früher Tod im Jahr 1895 erlaubte es ihm aber nicht mehr, den letzten Schritt in die Moderne mitzugehen. A RUSH OF COLOR/FARBENRAUSCH at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

LEOPOLD MUSEUM presents masterpieces of German Expressionism from the collection of the Osthaus Museum in Hagen. Works by artists of “Die Brücke”, including Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Mueller and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and exponents of the “Blaue Reiter” movement, such as Alexey von Jawlensky, Franz Marc and others, as well as numerous works by Christian Rohlfs illustrate the German avant-garde’s departure into Modernism. The exhibition is complemented by a selection of Expressionist works from the collection of the Leopold Museum and the Leopold Private Collection. Oct 9th 2015 to Jan 11th, 2016.

Tracey Emin at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

"TRACEY EMIN | EGON SCHIELE Where I Want to Go" at LEOPOLD MUSEUM features more than 80 works by the British artist Tracey Emin (born in 1963). She will not only present her own works but will also incorporate a personal selection of drawings by Egon Schiele into the exhibition. The juxtaposition of Tracey Emin’s works with those of Egon Schiele exposes similarities in the artistic aspirations of both artists and allows for a new visual experience. WALLY NEUZIL Her Life with Egon Schiele at LEOPOLD MUSEUM

The exhibition "WALLY NEUZIL Her Life with Egon Schiele" at the LEOPOLD MUSEUM seeks to uncover the person behind the painters model Walburga “Wally” Neuzil (1894-1917), approaching her through artworks, autographs, photographs and documents. The exhibition examines the stages of Wally’s life, her professions, from model to nurse, and tells the tale of a woman’s fate in fin-de-siècle Vienna, between self-sacrifice and self-fulfillment, between a life without taboos and profound humanity. Wally Neuzil was not only Egon Schiele’s model from early 1911 but also his girlfriend and faithful companion until the spring of 1915 and played a key role in Schiele’s life and works. Die Ausstellung "WALLY NEUZIL Ihr Leben mit Egon Schiele" im LEOPOLD MUSEUM nähert sich der Person des berühmtesten Schiele Models Walburga »Wally« Neuzil (1894–1917) anhand von Kunstwerken, Autografen, Fotos und Dokumenten. Die Schau widmet sich neben bedeutenden Gemälden von Schiele und Zeichnungen und Aquarelle des Künstlers, für die Wally Modell stand, ihren Lebensstationen, ihren Berufen, vom Modell bis zur Kranken­pflegerin, und schildert das Schicksal einer Frau im Wien der Jahrhundertwende, zwischen Aufopferung und Selbstverwirklichung, zwischen Tabulosigkeit und tiefer Mitmenschlichkeit. Wally Neuzil war seit Anfang 1911 nicht nur als Modell für Egon Schiele tätig, ­sondern zugleich bis ins Frühjahr 1915 hinein seine Freundin und treue Gefährtin und spielte eine Schlüsselrolle im Leben und Werk Schieles. 27.
