Monica Bonvicini at Belvedere 21

For the Belvedere 21 — originally the Austrian pavilion at the World’s Fair in Brussels in 1958—Monica Bonvicini has developed a site-specific and space-consuming installation "I CANNOT HIDE MY ANGER" that reacts radically to Karl Schwanzer’s architecture. As such, it reflects male-dominated power structures, which are expressed just as much in the constructed space as in art history, politics and language. With this work Bonvicini focuses on the relationship between architecture, gender roles, control mechanisms, and devices of power thru a multimedia approach, using drawing, sculpture, installation, video, and photography. Curated by Axel Köhne. 28 June 2019 to 27 October 2019.

28. Juni 2019 bis 27. Oktober 2019.

Nora Schultz, Rosalind Nashashibi, Fiona Connor at SECESSION

Nora Schultz' installation "would you say this is the day?" at the main hall of the Secession comprises several individual elements. These play with the specific architectural and local conditions, and literally inscribe themselves in the site. Three sculptures made of aluminium wire placed around the space and squeezed in between floor and ceiling (Atlas / The Day 1, 2 and 3). Their open shape forms abstract spatial drawings, which allow a view to the space above the glass ceiling that is usually concealed. Two new video works – Whale Watch and Simulated Whale Watch (both 2019) – are shown in the side wings. While the former documents a boat trip for the purpose of spotting whales on the eastern coast of the USA around Boston, including a few distortions, Simulated Whale Watch was filmed with a GoPro camera in the artist’s studio and based on a script. The sound installation The Sound will be Untied (2019) creates an invisible link that frames the space and creates a (performative) connection between the installation and the outside space. It is based on recordings of the constant hum of the air conditioning system in the artist’s studio in Boston. Rosalind Nashashibi, DEEP REDDER: Nashashibi presents paintings and a new film in two parts, the fruit of a sustained, process-based, and ongoing meditation on social norms of family life. The paintings in the exhibition are even more direct equivalents of her own experiences of being in the world, “of standing in two states, with feet and ankles in water and legs dry, of a lamb craning its neck upwards, or a calf with its face hidden from our view and yet lit my moonlight” (Rosalind Nashashibi). Fiona Connor, #8, Closed for Installation, Sequence of Events: For her exhibition at the Secession Connor has developed a body of work that comprises 23 bronze objects that resemble tools commonly used in the installation process of an exhibition: a measuring tape, ruler, pencil, dolly, etc. The sculptures work with the rules of a certain period of labour and maintenance, replicating tools that look very similar all around the world and are usually out of sight at the opening of the exhibition. June 27th to Sep 1st, 2019.

27. Juni – 1. September 2019.
