Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic* and Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński at Kunsthalle Wien

Kunsthalle Wien dedicates to Vienna-based artists* Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic* and Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński two solo shows, which take place simultaneously in the upper hall of Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier. Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic*’s works take the shape of multimedia installations mixing film, photography, objects, and text. She* looks closely at the fabrication of history, memory, and subjectivity—insisting on the unconscious at work in these processes. In the exhibition, the artist* (re)tells the stories of queerness as a survival strategy, of non-alignment as ethics (and not only as geopolitics), and of family as a space for chosen kinship. She* stages moments of subversion, crisis, and resistance, and in this way attempts to figure out how a contemporary subject can dig up and appropriate hidden histories in order to escape cultural, social, and psychological assignations.
In her works, be they photographic series, films, or installations, Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński creates spaces for encounter, conversation, and sometimes confrontation between herself and the viewer, but first and foremost between herself and the people who populate her pieces, her memories, and her imagination. Intertwining critical Black feminist theory, conceptual visual strategies, and (science-)fictional narration, Kazeem-Kamiński explores diverse methods to communicate across time and space as well as to set the conditions and to create spaces—real and imagined—for the processing of the past, invention of the future, and disintegration of the present as it is. 22.10.2021 - 06.02.2022.

Die Kunsthalle Wien widmet den in Wien lebenden Künstlerinnen* Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic* und Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński zwei Einzelausstellungen, die gleichzeitig in der oberen Halle der Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier zu sehen sind. Die Werke von Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic* sind multimediale Installationen, die Film, Fotografie, Objekte und Text miteinander verbinden. Die Künstlerin* beschäftigt sich eingehend mit der Fabrikation von Geschichte, Erinnerung und Subjektivität. In der Ausstellung erzählt die Künstlerin* Geschichten von Queerness als Überlebensstrategie, von non-alignment als Ethik (und nicht nur als Geopolitik) und von Familie als Raum für selbstgewählte Verwandtschaft.
Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński schafft in ihren Arbeiten – seien es Fotoserien, Filme oder Installationen – Raum für Begegnungen, Gespräche und gelegentlich auch Auseinandersetzungen zwischen ihr und dem Publikum. Die Künstlerin verknüpft kritische Schwarze feministische Theorie, konzeptuelle visuelle Strategien und fiktionale Narration (ein­schließlich Science-Fiction), und erforscht verschiedene Methoden, um über Zeiten und Räume hinweg zu kommunizieren. 22.10.2021 - 06.02.2022.

Kunsthalle Wien and Wiener Festwochen present the joint exhibition And if I devoted my life to one of its feathers?, which combines works by more than 35 artists from around the world, located everywhere from the Amazon region to Australia, from Guatemala to India. Their works seek not only to awaken public consciousness to the realities of environmental exploitation and destruction, but also to question and to deconstruct traditional Western patriarchal models, gender roles, and enduring colonial and racist discourses and invites the visitors to take part in a unique conversation about power, sovereignty, self-representation, and the reclaiming of a plurality of life choices. 15.05. – 26.9.2021.

'… of bread, wine, cars, security and peace' is the first exhibition WHW have curated since taking over the directorship of Kunsthalle Wien. At the beginning of the 2000s, Lebanese writer Bilal Khbeiz described the unattainable dreams of a “good life” for people in the Global South – in contrast to the Western world – with “bread, wine, cars, security and peace”. Presenting works by artists of different generations, the exhibition offers perspectives on the “good life” to suggest real alternatives to the perpetuation of ruinous economic violence and monstrous social forms. Anfang der der 2000er-Jahre beschrieb der libanesische Schriftstellers Bilal Khbeiz die unerreichbaren Träume vom ‚guten Leben‘ für Menschen im Globalen Süden – im Gegensatz zu jenen in der westlichen Welt – mit dieser Auflistung: Brot, Wein, Autos, Sicherheit und Frieden. An beiden Standorten der Kunsthalle Wien – im Museumsquartier und am Karlsplatz – zeigen Künstler*innen verschiedener Generationen Perspektiven für ein ‚gutes Leben‘ auf und schlagen reale Alternativen zur endlosen Fortsetzung zerstörerischer ökonomischer wie gesellschaftlicher Gewalt vor. Heinz Frank at Kunsthalle Wien, Karlsplatz

Kunsthalle Wien, Karlsplatz: Heinz Frank (* 1939 Vienna). The Angle of the End Always Comes from Behind. Trained as an electrical engineer and architect, Heinz Frank has been working hands-on as a sculptor, draftsman, painter, and creator of linguistic and object art, as well as occasionally, designer of interiors and furniture since the 1970s. Aphoristic notes such as “The hole is the epitome of emptiness” provide the initial sparks for a creative process resulting in pictures and constructions that not only blur boundaries between genres, techniques, and materials. More generally, the artist suspends norms and conventions — or to be more precise, he strips them of their power as agents of the disconnect between reason and emotion. That is why one of Frank’s guiding mottos is “Thinking what one feels and feeling what one thinks.” Enlivened by a dash of irony and with what appears to be playful ease, his formal-visual, intellectual, and material balancing acts, which often take inspiration from diverse cultural strands, recombine what society and tradition would keep strictly separate in manifold variations. Frank’s background in architecture is evident throughout: the measure of all things, of their proportions and relation to the space around them, remains the human being—and the artist himself. Kunsthalle Wien, Karlsplatz: Heinz Frank (* 1939 Wien). Der Winkel des Endes kommt immer von hinten. Ausgebildet als Elektrotechniker und Architekt, werkt und wirkt Heinz Frank seit den 1970er Jahren als Bildhauer, Zeichner, Maler, Sprach- und Objektkünstler, manchmal auch als Entwerfer von Innenräumen und Einrichtungsgegenständen. Stets ausgehend von aphoristischen Aufzeichnungen wie etwa „Das Loch ist der Inbegriff der Leere“ lässt er in seinen daraus entstehenden Bildern und Gebilden nicht nur Grenzen zwischen Gattungsbegriffen, Techniken und Materialien verfließen. Er hebt auch generell Normen und Konventionen aus den Angeln – oder genauer: Er enthebt sie ihrer Mächtigkeit als Trennungsinstanzen zwischen Vernunft und Emotion. Eine wesentliche Devise von Frank lautet daher: „Gefühltes denken und Gedachtes fühlen“. Angereichert mit einer Prise Ironie rekombinieren seine formalvisuellen, geistigen, materiellen und gerne auch multikulturell gespeisten Balanceakte scheinbar spielerisch gesellschaftlich und traditionell Getrenntes in mannigfaltigen Variationen. Wobei Frank immer auch Architekt bleibt: Das Maß seiner Dinge ist bezüglich ihrer Proportionen und Verhältnisse zum Umraum der Mensch – und damit er selber. Kurator: Lucas Gehrmann.

Annette Kelm at Kunsthalle Wien

Annette Kelm’s exhibition of photos Tomato Target at the Kunsthalle Wien shows precise fractious motifs that quote the still life, object or studio photography, or the classical architecture shot, yet without ever fully complying with the conventions governing these genres. They flatten things into the plane or subject them to multiplication in series. The emphasis on the factual precludes any symbolism strictly speaking, yet the cultural or ideological burden with which certain objects are fraught is unmistakable. This focus on formal criteria and the eschewal of narration of any kind are also destabilized by the selective insertion of props that bear no readily recognizable relation to a picture’s central object. Die Fotoausstellung Annette Kelm. Tomato Target in der Kunsthalle Wien zeigt scheinbar einfache, zugleich aber widerspenstige Motive, die auf Genres wie das Stillleben, auf Objekt- oder Studiofotografie oder die klassische Architekturaufnahme zurückgreifen, ohne deren Konvention vollständig zu erfüllen. Sie ebnen die Dinge in die Fläche oder vervielfachen sie in der Serie. Die Betonung des Faktischen schließt jede Symbolik aus, zugleich tritt jedoch die kulturelle oder ideologische Aufladung bestimmter Objekte in den Vordergrund. Irritiert werden diese Ausrichtung an formalen Kriterien und der Verzicht auf alles Erzählerische auch durch das punktuelle Einfügen von Requisiten, die in keiner unmittelbaren Beziehung zum zentralen Bildgegenstand stehen. Antarctica. An Exhibition on Alienation at the Kunsthalle Wien looks at the pattern underlying alienation – this “relationship based on the absence of a relationship.” Showing numerous contemporary artworks; the exhibition explores how the term “alienation” functions in our world today. In doing so, it also addresses the following question: What other forms of relationship to the self and to the world do we need? Angesprochen ist damit auch die Frage, welche anderen Formen des Welt- und Selbstbezugs es braucht, um überhaupt so etwas wie Raum für Selbstbestimmung und Selbstverwirklichung zu schaffen. Saâdane Afif at Kunsthalle Wien, Karlsplatz

On one side side of the Kunsthalle Vienna at the Karlsplatz the French artist Saâdane Afif shows around sixty documents about Yasmine d’Ouezzan – a French-Moroccan woman born in 1913 who was the first French female carom billiard champion. The exhibits are presented on a several-meter-long structure made of wooden panels and painted yellow, evoking temporary exhibitions in town halls or at tourist information centers. On the other side of the room a text by Thomas Clerc is screened on a LED panel. The script was inspired by one of Saâdane Afif's earlier performance pieces, Souvenir: La Leçon de Géométrie, in which seven figures meet Yasmine d’Ouezzan.The entire exhibition oscillates between fictional and documentary moments, between (fake) musealization and the creation of a myth. In Saâdane Afif’s work, d’Ouezzan becomes a motif, inflected in several manners and metamorphosed by the artist in his own quest to invent and create a new artistic shape through history and space. Auf einer Seite der Kunsthalle Wien am Karlsplatz zeigt der französische KünstlerSaâdane Afif mit This Is Ornamental etwa sechzig Dokumente zum Leben von Yasmine d’Ouezzans, eine Französin mit marokkanischen Wurzeln, die von 1932 bis 1938 französische Billardmeisterin war. Der Künstler montiert die Exponate auf einer mehrere Meter langen gelb gestrichenen Konstruktion aus Holz, die an Wechselausstellungen in Rathäusern oder Fremdenverkehrsämtern denken lässt. Im anderen Teil des Ausstellungsraums erscheint der Text eines Stücks von Thomas Clerc, basierend auf der Performancearbeit Souvenir: La Leçon de Géométrie, auf einem LED-Paneel, in dem sieben Figuren auf Yasmine d’Ouezzan treffen. In Saâdane Afifs Werk wird d’Ouezzan zu einem vielseitig facettierten Motiv, das der Künstler schafft, um seinerseits eine neue künstlerische Gestalt durch Geschichte und Raum zu erfinden und zum Leben zu erwecken. Olaf Nicolai at Kunsthalle Wien

There Is No Place Before Arrival is the title of the multilayered exhibition Kunsthalle Wien dedicates to German artist Olaf Nicolai, which comprises a main installation conceived specifically for the main hall of Kunsthalle Wien and expands beyond the walls of the institution through an array of interventions – both object and time-based, physical and performative – at different venues offering an expanded project which takes place between private and public spaces. At Kunsthalle Wien Olaf Nicolai has commissioned several street and theatre painters to paint onto the floor a pool of twenty-two images of different kinds selected from his personal archive of newspaper clippings. Mit There Is No Place Before Arrival widmet die Kunsthalle Wien dem deutschen Künstler Olaf Nicolai eine umfangreiche Ausstellung. Für eine temporäre, ortsspezifische Installation hat Nicolai Auftragsmaler verpflichtet, Bilder nach Vorlagen aus Zeitungsausschnitten auf dem Boden der Ausstellungshalle nachzuzeichnen. Auf diese Weise bildet sich eine begehbare Abfolge von Motiven; ein Tableau, das aus evokativen Bildern mit sowohl politischen als auch poetischen Konnotationen besteht. Bezeichnend für Nicolais Methodik ist seine Auseinandersetzung mit dem jeweiligen Kontext, in dem sein Werk gezeigt wird. Um diesen Kontext zu reflektieren und zu hinterfragen, setzt sich There Is No Place Before Arrival in Form interdisziplinärer Projekte fort, wodurch sich die Bezüge und Interaktionen zwischen den Werken und ihrer Umgebung vervielfältigen. Florian Hecker at Kunsthalle Wien

For Florian Hecker's 'Hallucination, Perspective, Synthesis' the exhibition space of Kunsthalle Wien transforms into a performative, resonating space and stage for sound events that withdraw from linguistic description and categorization. Hecker uses synthetic sounds and the listener’s auditory process to create acoustic spaces of experience. His computer-generated compositions dramatize psychoacoustics as well as objective-physical stimuli and their individual, psychic and physical impacts. Multichannel installations unfold a sculptural presence that shakes the idea of a coherent, continuous world of identifiable coordinates and points of reference. Curator: Vanessa Joan Müller. Der Ausstellungsraum der Kunsthalle Wien präsentiert sich im Rahmen von Florian Heckers "Halluzination, Perspektive, Synthese" als Aufführungsort, Resonanzraum und Bühne für Klangereignisse, die sich einer sprachlichen Beschreibung und Kategorisierung entziehen. Synthetischen Sounds schaffen akustische Erfahrungsräume und setzt den Hörprozess der Betrachter/innen als Material ein. Heckers computergenerierten Kompositionen dramatisieren Fragestellungen der Psychoakustik, objektivphysikalischer Reize und deren individuelle, psychische wie physische Wirkung. Mehr-Kanal-Installationen entfalten eine skulpturale Präsenz, die die Vorstellung einer kohärenten, kontinuierlichen Welt aus identifizierbaren Koordinaten und Bezugspunkten ins Wanken geraten lässt. Camille Henrot at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz

Camille Henrot's If Wishes Were Horses at the Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz comprises an entirely new body of work produced for the occasion – sculpture, installation and a film. The different elements that comprise the show unfold a choreography and comprehensive dialogue, drawing upon formal structures and raising questions that derive from Henrot’s greater investigation on the human propensity toward dependency. “What makes a verbal message a work of art?” (Roman Jakobson) The exhibition More Than Just Words [On the Poetic] at the Kunsthalle Vienna finds the answer in concrete poetry, film, collages, installations and performances. Poetry has long since been a source of inspiration for the visual arts. The exhibition, however, is less interested in poetry as words that rhyme, but in what Roman Jakobson described as “the poetic function of language”: the aesthetic dimension of language that reaches beyond its merely communicative function. Die Poesie ist längst eine Quelle der Inspiration für die bildende Kunst. Die Ausstellung interessiert sich allerdings weniger für eine Poesie der sich reimenden Worte, als für das, was der Linguist Roman Jakobson als die „poetische Funktion der Sprache“ bezeichnet hat: die ästhetische Dimension der Sprache, die über ihre bloß kommunikative Funktion hinausgeht. Béton at Kunsthalle Wien

The Kunsthalle Wien and the artists of the show "Béton" reflect on brutalism, the architectural style in the 1950s and 60s based on concrete, when concrete was regarded as the epitome of modernism. Aiming to change society, brutalist architecture virtually gave shape to utopia. Today, many of the buildings built at that time are considered to have failed their purpose and are threatened with demolition. For the sake of remembering that architecture was once more than enclosed space, and concrete was not merely a building material but was historically and ideologically charged contemporary art once again carve out its original ideas, its euphoria, but also its failure. 25/6 to 16/10 2016.

Die Kunsthalle Wien und die Künstler der Ausstellung "BETON" setzen sich mit dem Brutalismus in der Architektur der 1950er und 1960er Jahre auseinander, als Beton als Inbegriff der Moderne galt. Diese Architektur zielte explizit auf eine Veränderung der Gesellschaft ab – ist gewissermaßen Form gewordene Utopie. Heute, da diese Zielsetzung als gescheitert gilt und viele Gebäude der damaligen Zeit vom Abriss bedroht sind, arbeitet die bildende Kunst noch einmal die ursprünglichen Ideen heraus, ihre Euphorie, aber auch ihr Scheitern – als Erinnerung daran, dass Architektur einmal mehr war als nur umbauter Raum und Beton nicht nur ein Baustoff ist, sondern ein historisch wie ideologisch aufgeladenes Material. 25/6 bis 16/10 2016.

Individual Stories at Kunsthalle Wien

With "Individual Stories. Collecting as Portrait and Methodology" the Kunsthalle Wien shows collections put together by artists. Artists collect a variety of objects. Their interest may lie in the formal, the aesthetic or the conceptual. While they generate personal collections regardless of their artistic practice, they also create collections based on artistic methods. The collection may itself reach the status of a work of art. Individual Stories considers the collection a portrait of its collector and also an artistic method, an expression of curiosity, transforming discovery, or a systematic approach to certain worlds of objects. Die Kunsthalle Wien zeigt mit "Individual Stories. Sammeln als Porträt und Methodologie" Sammlungen, die von Künstlern angelegt wurden. Künstler/innen sammeln aus formalen, ästhetischen oder konzeptionellen Interessen heraus eine Vielzahl von Dingen. Sie legen nicht nur unabhängig von ihrem eigenen Kunstschaffen persönliche Sammlungen an, sondern erstellen auch Sammlungen, denen eine künstlerische Methode zugrunde liegt oder die sogar selbst den Status eines Kunstwerks erlangen. Die Sammlungen sind Ausdruck von Neugier, Entdeckertum oder der methodischen Annäherung an besondere Objektwelten. Destination Vienna 2015 at Kunsthalle Vienna provides a comprehensive insight into Vienna’s current art scene. At it's two venues at Museumsquartier and at Karlsplatz the Kunsthalle Wien in presents more than 70 positions of contemporary art. Pierre Bismuth at Kunsthalle Wien

Pierre Bismuth’s solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien "The Curator, the Lawyer and the Psychoanalyst" brings together works by the artist from the years 1988 to 2014. Besides smaller works on paper, it present objects as well as audio and video installations. Bismuth opposes the real world, consisting of regulated systems of signs, with another world in which uncertainty and the unknown are dominant. Curator: Luca Lo Pinto. Feb 4th - March 22nd, 2015.

Pierre Bismuths Einzelausstellung "Der Kurator, der Anwalt und der Psychoanalytiker" in der Kunsthalle Wien zeigt Arbeiten des Künstlers aus den Jahren 1988 bis 2014. Neben kleineren Arbeiten auf Papier werden auch Objekte sowie Audio- und Videoinstallationen zu sehen sein. Blue Times at Kunsthalle

The group exhibition Blue Times at Kunsthalle Wien presents works by over thirty international artists showing associative social history of the colour blue, focussing on its psychological, metaphorical and associative power, but also its instrumentalisation for ideological, political and economic purposes. From the conceptual wordplay of Lawrence Weiner’s OUT OF THE BLUE to Derek Jarman’s ode to the colour blue. From Walid Raad’s monochrome pictures over Remco Torenbosch’s study of the flag of the European Union to Raed Yassin’s Chinese vases filled with the inscriptions of other cultures and Jonathan Monk’s world map made out of blue work clothes. The Blue Salon expands the exhibition into the broader field of cultural history and will host workshops, roundtable talks and music and film nights. Die Gruppenausstellung Blue Times in der Kunsthalle Wien versammelt über dreißig internationale künstlerische Positionen, um eine assoziative Sozialgeschichte der Farbe zu entwerfen, die ihre psychologische, metaphorische, und assoziative Kraft thematisiert, aber auch ihre Instrumentalisierung zu ideologischen, politischen oder ökonomischen Zwecken. Von Lawrence Weiners konzeptuellem Wortspiel OUT OF THE BLUE über Derek Jarmans Ode an die Farbe Blau bis zu Walid Raads monochromen Bildern, Remco Torenboschs Studie über die Flagge der Europäischen Union, Raed Yassins Aufladung chinesischer Vasen mit anderen kulturellen Einschreibungen und Jonathan Monks Weltkarte aus blauer Arbeitskleidung. Der Blaue Salon erweitert die Ausstellung in den Bereich der Kulturgeschichte hinein. An ausgewählten Tagen aktiviert sich der Blaue Salon: Unter dem Titel Blau machen finden Workshops, Roundtable-Gespräche, Musik- und Filmabende statt.

Isa Genzken at Kunsthalle Wien

The exhibition „I’m Isa Genzken, The Only Female Fool“ at Kunsthalle Vienna focuses on special aspects of Isa Genzken’s oeuvre: the mirror motif, the examination of architecture, space as a social sphere. Early works such as the Hyperbolos and Ellipsoides are juxtaposed with series from later creative periods such as the New Buildings for Berlin (2014) or the Strandhäuser zum Umziehen (Beach Huts) (2000). Another point of focus is Genzken’s collaboration with other artists and her admiration for certain artistic positions. Selected works by Dan Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark, Jasper Johns, Gerhard Richter, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Lawrence Weiner are presented in dialogue with Genzken’s multi-layered work. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung „I’m Isa Genzken, The Only Female Fool“ in der Kunsthalle Wien stehen spezielle Aspekte von Genzkens Werk: das Spiegelmotiv, die Auseinandersetzung mit Architektur und der Raum als Sphäre des Sozialen. Neben frühen Werken wie den sogenannten Hyperbolos und Ellipsoiden sind Serien aus späteren Schaffensphasen wie die New Buildings for Berlin (2014) oder die Strandhäuser zum Umziehen (2000) zu sehen. Ein weiteres zentrales Motiv ist die Zusammenarbeit Genzkens mit anderen Künstlern und die Bewunderung, die sie bestimmten künstlerischen Positionen entgegenbringt. Ausgewählte Arbeiten von Dan Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark, Jasper Johns, Gerhard Richter, Wolfgang Tillmans und Lawrence Weiner werden deshalb dialogisch mit Genzkens vielschichtigem Werk inszeniert. Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys at Kunsthalle Wien

The installation „Das Wunder des Lebens (The Miracle of Life)“ at the Kunsthalle Wien by the belgian artitists Jos de Gruyters und Harald Thys is dedicated to the absurdity of everyday life. Around 400 drawings (purposely done in a rather banal fashion) which, according to the artists show everything we can imagine, are mounted on a formation of numerous room-divider “barricades”. Whereas the order of the pictures follows no specific principle, the system on which they are mounted is strictly organised. At the centre is a sculptural fountain. In an audioguide developed by the artists a monotone computer generated voice describes the drawings as banal as they are. Curators: Lucas Gehrmann, Nicolaus Schafhausen. Feb 2nd to May 4th, 2014.

Mit der Ausstellung „Das Wunder des Lebens“ in der Kunsthalle Wien widmen sich die belgischen Künstler Jos de Gruyters und Harald Thys der Absurdität des Alltäglichen. In einem strengen System aus weissen Stellwänden in deren Mitte eine ebenfalls weisse Brunnenskulptur aufragt zeigen sie etwa 400 Zeichnungen in banal wirkender Machart, die – so die Künstler – alles zeigen, was wir uns vorstellen können Raum-Barrikaden. Im Raum hört man das gleichförmige Plätschern des Brunnens und ist aufgefordert mit den von den Künstlern programmierten Audioguides den monoton-banalen Bildbeschreibungen einer Computerstimme zu den einzelnen Zeichnungen zu lauschen.
