MUMOK ”Painting: Process and Expansion - From the 1950s till now”

theartVIEw joins the opening night of this spectaclular exhibition about painting at the MUMOK. Painting as a processual, self-reflecting medium and the expansion of painting, where it references objects and space and leads to the dissolution of the picture.
The first part starting with Jackson Pollock, Yves Klein, Morris Louis, Arnulf Rainer, Hermann Nitsch and Max Weiler to the present day (Joseph Marioni, David Reed, Bernard Frize, amongst others) and Austrian artists (Erwin Bohatsch, Herbert Brandl, Jakob Gasteiger, Hubert Scheibl, Andreas Reiter Raabe, Walter Vopava, amongst others).
 The second part of the exhibition follows the dissolution of the pictorial format which began to take place in the 1950s, a radical redefinition of painting and pictures in their relationship to both space and the viewer. The works shows historical positions of the 1960s and 1970s (Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Morris, Joseph Kosuth, Karel Malich, François Morellet, Max Weiler, Alfons Schilling, Jorrit Tornquist) to the most recent past and the immediate present (Imi Knöbel, Heinrich Dunst, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Adrian Schiess, Jessica Stockholder, Heimo Zobernig, Christian Eisenberger). Vernissage einer spektakulären Ausstellung im MUMOK über die Entwicklung der Malerei seit den 1950ger Jahren bis heute. Einerseits Malerei als selbstreflexiver Prozess, andererseits die Expansion der Malerei ins Objekthafte und Räumliche.
Im ersten Teil spannt sich der Bogen von Jackson Pollock, Yves Klein, Morris Louis, Arnulf Rainer, Hermann Nitsch und Max Weiler bis heute (u. a. Joseph Marioni, David Reed, Bernard Frize und österreichischer Künstler u. a. Erwin Bohatsch, Herbert Brandl, Jakob Gasteiger, Hubert Scheibl, Andreas Reiter Raabe, Walter Vopava).
Der zweite Teil der Ausstellung verfolgt die in den 1950er Jahren einsetzende Eroberung des Raumes Transformation ins Installative und Objekthafte bis zur Auflösung des Bildformats. Historischen Positionen der 1960er und 1970er Jahre (Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Morris, Joseph Kosuth, Karel Malich, François Morellet, Max Weiler, Alfons Schilling, Jorrit Tornquist) bis in die jüngste Vergangenheit und Gegenwart (Imi Knöbel, Heinrich Dunst, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Adrian Schiess, Jessica Stockholder, Heimo Zobernig, Christian Eisenberger).
