XTRAVAGANZA - Staging Leigh Bowery opened at KUNSTHALLE Vienna. Leigh Bowery (1961-1994), who once said “I think of myself as a canvas,” was a radical fashion designer, performer, musican, artist and notorious enfant terrible. In London’s (gay) sub-culture of the 1980s he was friend and source of inspiration for numerous artists, photographers, and film makers. The show presents several of his glamorous and eccentric outfits, (fashion) photographies, films and memorabilia. He was also model in several of Lucien Freud's paintings. Leigh Bowery (1961-1994), der von sich sagte "I think of myself as a canvas" war ein exzentrischer Modedesigner und Selbstdarsteller, Performer, Musiker, Künstler und gefürchtetes enfant terrible. Leigh Bowerys exzentrische Darbietungen in der Londoner Subkultur der 1980er-Jahres stellen bis heute eine Inspirationsquelle für zahlreiche Künstler, Fotografen und Filmemacher dar. Mit viel Humor und einer Bad Taste Attitüde hielt Leigh Bowery individuellen Erwartungen und gesellschaftlichen Konventionen den Spiegel der Fremdbestimmung vor. Für Lucien Freud stand er mit seinem massigen Körper für mehrere Bilder Modell. Leigh Bowery, geboren 1961 in Sunshine (AUS), starb 1994 an AIDS. Kuratorin: Angela Stief. 19. Oktober 2012 - 03.
