From 1800 artists paid increasing attention to the motif of clouds. These strange, elusive formations consisting of water, air and light appear as conveyors of different emotions and messages. Bushy clouds in a sunny sky seem to be an almost indispensible feature in idyllic depictions of nature. A sky traversed by dark rain and thunder clouds is perceived as threatening and a band of clouds bathed in the red evening light sets a melancholy mood. Filmed or photographed man made clouds that appear out of control as a result of technical intervention, such as exhaust fumes and atomic explosions or the more poetic gas filled Silver Clouds by Andy Warhol add even more aspects.

Das LEOPOLD MUSEUM zeigt in der Ausstellung "Wolken. Welt des Flüchtigen" Wolkenbilder vom frühen 19. Jahrhundert bis heute – von William Turner bis Gerhard Richter. Wolken, diese schwer fassbare Gebilde aus Wasser, Luft und Licht lösen beim Betrachter unterschiedliche Empfindungen und Botschaften aus: Wolken im sonnigen Himmel als Naturidylle, bedrohliche dunkle Regen- oder Gewitterwolken, ein in Abendlicht getauchtes Wolkenband lösst melancholische Empfindungen aus. Aber auch Unheil verkündende von Menschenhand erzeugte Wolkenmassen, von rauchenden Abgasen bis zu atomaren Explosionen, sind ebenso in der Schau vertreten wie Andy Warhols künstliche Gas gefüllte Silver Clouds.
