BELVEDERE devotes the exhibition „Danse Macabre - Egger-Lienz and the War“ at the Orangery to Albin Egger-Lienz (1868–1926). His WWI paintings are impressive memorials warning against the horrors of fighting and violence. In 1906, the purchasing commission of the Modern Gallery, today’s Belvedere, commissioned the artist to create a work. In time for the diamond jubilee of Emperor Francis Joseph I and shortly before the 100th anniversary of the Tyrolean Wars of Liberation, Egger-Lienz delivered the painting Danse Macabre of 1809, the earliest surviving version of a motif with which he frequently dealt between 1906 and 1921. Danse Macabre: Egger-Lienz and the War traces Egger-Lienz’s artistic evolution and elucidates various references and lines of interpretation as well as presenting numerous essential works by other artists trying to overcome the traumatic experiences of WWI. 7 March to 9 June 2014.

Das BELVEDERE zeigt in der Orangerie die Ausstellung Totentanz: Egger-Lienz und der Krieg. Die Weltkrieg I Bilder des Malers Albin Egger-Lienz (1868–1926) gelten heute als eindringliche Mahnmale gegen die Gräuel von Kampf und Gewalt. Ausgehend vom Gemälde Der Totentanz von Anno Neun und anhand weiterer Arbeiten beleuchtet die Ausstellung die künstlerische Entwicklung Egger-Lienz’ und zeigt unterschiedliche Interpretationsstränge sowie Bezüge auf. Im Dialog mit anderen Schlüsselbildern der künstlerischen Bewältigung des Ersten Weltkriegs, beispielsweise Ernst Barlachs Der Rächer, Alfred Kubins Der Krieg, Otto Dix' Krüppeldarstellungen, Max Beckmanns Familienbilder oder Käthe Kollwitz' Mütter, wird Egger-Lienz’ eigenständige künstlerische Position, die sich als zeitgemäß und gegen den Zeitgeschmack widerständig zugleich entpuppt, besonders deutlich. 07.03.2014 bis 09.06.2014.
