Vija Celmins and Julia Haller at SECESSION

For her retrospective at the main hall of the SECESSION Vija Celmins has selected over seventy works of graphic art from five decades; it surveys work she created as a student in the early 1960s to several recent editions that have never been on public display. Printmaking occupies a central position among the many media Celmins works with, on a par with drawing, painting, and sculpture. She uses images from photographs and found printed matter —seas, deserts, nocturnal skies, spider webs— stripping the sources of their original contexts and reassembling them in a new medium. Vija Celmins was born in Riga (Latvia) in 1938. At the end of World War II, her family fled the country, first to Germany and then to the United States. Celmins lived and worked in Los Angeles from 1962 to 1981 before moving to New York.

For Smile from the Streets You Hold at the Secession's basement Julia Haller has produced a new series of works. The perception of the rooms, in which she will present the new series, is modified thanks to minimal interventions. Subtle gestures of refusal and of defiance shape the aesthetic repertoire of the artist. Julia Haller, born in Frankfurt/Main in 1978, lives and works in Berlin and Vienna.Nov 20th, 2015 – Jan 31st, 2016.

In der von Vija Celmins selbst zusammengestellte Retrospektive in der großen Halle der SECESSION zeigt sie über 70 Arbeiten aus ihrem druckgrafischen Oeuvre aus fünf Jahrzehnten: von Radierungen aus ihrer Studienzeit in den frühen 1960er-Jahren hin zu einer Reihe neuer, bislang nicht gezeigter Editionen. Vija Celmins ist seit den 1970er-Jahren für ihre eingängigen Sujets – Meere, Wüsten, Nachthimmel und Spinnennetze –, die sie in diversen Medien umsetzt, bekannt. Vija Celmins, geboren 1938 in Riga (Lettland), floh bei Kriegsende mit ihrer Familie über Deutschland in die USA. Von 1962 bis 1981 lebte und arbeitet sie in Los Angeles, seither in New York.

Für "Smile from the Streets You Hold" im Untergeschoß der Secession stellte Julia Haller eine neue Werkserie her. Subtile Eingriffe werden die Wahrnehmung der Räume, in denen sie die neue Serie präsentierten wird, beeinflussen. Subtile Gesten der Verweigerung und des Gegenläufigen prägen das ästhetische Repertoire der Künstlerin. Julia Haller, geboren 1978 in Frankfurt/Main, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Wien. 20.
