With PROVOKE the ALBERTINA shows around 200 works by Japan’s most influential photographers of the 1960s and 1970s including Daidō Moriyama, Yutaka Takanashi, Shomei Tomatsu, and Nobuyoshi Araki. In the light of massive protest movements in Japan during this period, their photographs arose at a historical turning point between societal collapse and the search for a new Japanese identity. These images thus represent both an expression of this political transformation and the renewal of prevalent aesthetic norms. The Japanese photo magazine Provoke, which ran for three issues in 1968 and 1969, is viewed as a one-of-a-kind agglomeration of post-war artistic efforts. This exhibition is a coproduction between Albertina, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Le Bal (Paris), and Art Institute of Chicago. Jan 29th to May 8th, 2016.
Die ALBERTINA zeigt in der Schau PROVOKE rund 200 Objekte japanischer Fotografen, darunter Daidō Moriyama, Yutaka Takanashi, Shomei Tomatsu und Nobuyoshi Araki, aus den Jahren 1960 bis 1975. Das zwischen 1968 und 1969 erschienene japanische Fotomagazin Provoke gilt als ein Höhepunkt der Fotografie der Nachkriegszeit. Vor dem Hintergrund der massiven Protestbewegungen in Japan zu dieser Zeit entstanden ihre Bilder an einem historischen Wendepunkt zwischen gesellschaftlichem Zusammenbruch und der Suche nach einer neuen Identität Japans. Ihre Fotografien sind sowohl Ausdruck des politischen Umbruchs als auch der Erneuerung vorherrschender ästhetischer Normen. Die Ausstellung ist eine Koproduktion zwischen der Albertina, Fotomuseum, Winterthur, Le Bal, Paris und Art Institute of Chicago. 29.01. - 08.05.2016.
