Monica Bonvicini at Belvedere 21

For the Belvedere 21 — originally the Austrian pavilion at the World’s Fair in Brussels in 1958—Monica Bonvicini has developed a site-specific and space-consuming installation "I CANNOT HIDE MY ANGER" that reacts radically to Karl Schwanzer’s architecture. As such, it reflects male-dominated power structures, which are expressed just as much in the constructed space as in art history, politics and language. With this work Bonvicini focuses on the relationship between architecture, gender roles, control mechanisms, and devices of power thru a multimedia approach, using drawing, sculpture, installation, video, and photography. Für das Belvedere 21 – ursprünglich der österreichische Pavillon auf der Weltausstellung 1958 in Brüssel – entwickelt Monica Bonvicini eine ortsspezifische und raumgreifende Installation, die radikal auf die Architektur Karl Schwanzers reagiert. Sie reflektiert damit männlich geprägte Machtstrukturen, die sich im gebauten Raum genauso ausdrücken wie in der Kunstgeschichte, der Politik und der Sprache. In dieser Arbeit rückt sie das Verhältnis von Architektur, Geschlechterrollen, Kontrollmechanismen und Machtdispositiven medienübergreifend mit Zeichnung, Skulptur, Installation, Video und Fotografie in den Mittelpunkt. Kuratiert von Axel Köhne. 28. Juni 2019 bis 27. Oktober 2019.
