Objects Recognized in Flashes at the mumok

Objects Recognized in Flashes is the title of a group exhibition at the mumok focusing on surfaces of photographs, products, and bodies. The exhibition was developed by the curator Matthias Michalka in consultation with the artists Michele Abeles, Annette Kelm, Josephine Pryde, and Eileen Quinlan. It asks how our largely mediatized society deals with and relates analogue and digital images. How are relations between material and immateriality, body, screen and photographic surface constituted? In our contemporary consumer culture, products and questions of commodity aesthetics are becoming more and more significant. This is not without consequences for our use of photographic images. Ubiquitous advertising, marketing, and product presentation create imaginary visual standards that have now become a firm fixture of our self representations in photos on social media platforms. The works by the four artists in the exhibition respond both in respect to each other, and to this changing context. Nov 16th, 2019 to April 13th, 2020.

Objects Recognized in Flashes lautet der Titel einer Gruppenausstellung im mumok, in deren Mittelpunkt die Auseinandersetzung mit den Oberflächen von Fotografien, Produkten und Körpern steht. Die Ausstellung ist in enger Zusammenarbeit des Kurators Matthias Michalka mit den Künstlerinnen Michele Abeles, Annette Kelm, Josephine Pryde und Eileen Quinlan entstanden und hinterfragt, wie wir in einer größtenteils medial vermittelten Gesellschaft mit analogen und digitalen Bildern umgehen und sie zueinander in Beziehung setzen. Wie gestaltet sich die Beziehung von Material und Immaterialität, von Körper, Screen und fotografischer Oberfläche? In unserer gegenwärtigen Konsumkultur kommt Produkten und Fragen der Warenästhetik eine immer bedeutendere Rolle zu. Dies bleibt auch für unseren Umgang mit fotografischen Bildern nicht ohne Konsequenzen. Allgegenwärtige Werbe-, Marketing- und Produktinszenierungen schaffen imaginäre visuelle Standards, die mittlerweile auf sozialen Plattformen zum festen Bestandteil permanenter fotografischer Selbstinszenierung geworden sind. Die Arbeiten der vier Künstlerinnen antworten in der Ausstellung sowohl auf die anderen Positionen wie auf diesen sich verändernden Kontext. 16.11.2019 – 13.04.2020.
