The Animal Within/Das Tier in Dir at mumok

In the mumok exhibition The Animal Within the animal as a motif serves as a starting point to get to a materialist understanding of art and life. The mumok collection contains nearly five hundred works related to animals—a considerable quantity that raises the question of what kind of zoo the museum in fact is. What is kept, researched, and displayed both here and there to protect “wild life” and the “freedom of art”? And in whose interest? In der mumok Ausstellung Das Tier in Dir dient das Tier als Motiv als Ausgangspunkt, um zu einem materialistischen Verständnis von Kunst und Leben zu gelangen. Die mumok Sammlung beinhaltet knapp fünfhundert Werke, die mit Tieren zu tun haben – eine beachtliche Anzahl, die die Frage aufwirft, was für ein Zoo eigentlich das Museum ist. Was wird hier wie dort verwahrt, beforscht und zur Schau gestellt, um die „Freiheit der Kunst“ und das „wild life“ zu schützen? Und in wessen Interesse?
