In his first retrospective in Austria the ALBERTINA presents a stunning selection of 180 works by MAX ERNST - paintings, collages, sculptures, books and documents. As an early protagonist of Dadaism, a pioneer of Surrealism, and inventor of artistic techniques as collage, frottage, grattage, decalcomania and oscillation. His inventiveness and his countless work phases made him one the leading figures of 20th-century art history. The exhibition is curated by Werner Spies and Julia Drost and ALBERTINA publishes catalogs in German and English. Jan 23 to May 5, 2013. After the show moves to the Fondation Beyeler in Basel.
Für die erste und längst überfällige Max Ernst Retrospektive in Österreich hat die ALBERTINA mit Hilfe des Kurators und Max Ernst Experten Werner Spies 180 Arbeiten aus allen Schaffensphasen zusammengetragen. Gemälde, Collagen, Skulpturen, Buchillustrationen und Dokumente zeigen Ernst als frühen Protagonisten von Dada und als Pionier des Surrealismus, als unermüdlichen Erfinder von Bild- und Inspirationstechnike wie Collage, Frottage, Grattage, Décalcomanie und Oszillation. Aber auch die zahlreichen wechselnden Werkphasen machen ihn zu einer wichtigsten Figuren der Kunstgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Zur Ausstellung erscheint ein Katalog in deutscher und englischer Ausgabe. 23. Januar 2013 - 5. Mai 2013. Danach ist die Schau in der Fondation Beyeler in Basel zu sehen.
