Balthus at KUNSTFORM WIEN

The Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien presents a retrospective of the work of Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (1908–2001), called “Balthus”, one of the great lone wolves among the painter personalities of the twentieth century. Balthus cultivated his own style of “different Modernism”, starting with early inspiration from the quattrocento, then revolving around Surrealism and neue Sachlichkeit (“New Objectivity”) and finally with his preoccupation with East Asian art. The support of the artist’s family and loans from international collections – Centre Pompidou, musée national d’art moderne , Paris, The Art Institute of Chicago, Tate London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York – underscores the significance of this exhibition. Das Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien zeigt eine Retrospektive zum Werk von Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (1908–2001), genannt „Balthus“, von seiner frühen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Quattrocento über seine Arbeiten im Umkreis von Surrealismus und neuer Sachlichkeit bis hin zu seiner Beschäftigung mit Ostasiatischer Kunst. Balthus pflegte abseits der Entwicklung aller Avantgarden seinen eigenen Stil der „anderen Moderne“. Die Unterstützung der Familie des Künstlers sowie Leihgaben aus internationalen Sammlungen – Centre Pompidou, musée national d’art moderne , Paris, The Art Institute of Chicago, Tate London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York – unterstreichen die Bedeutung dieser Ausstellung.
