The Cindy Sherman Effect at Kunstforum Wien

The Cindy Sherman Effect. Identity and Transformation in Contemporary Art. at the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien addresses one of the key issues in art: the preoccupation with themes of identity, its construction, forms of transformation and fiction are hot topics in the face of a world that is in constant flux through increasing globalisation. At the same time, new technologies such as the Internet, gene manipulation and cloning give cause for us to consider the concept of identity in terms of subject generation and definition. Cindy Sherman’s work is counted among the classics of performance photography and artistic role play; starting out from this base, the exhibition will cast light on these relevant questions pertaining to the theme of Identity. Sherman’s photographic works – developed out of 1970s performance art and her specific interest in ever-changing identities – has never ceased to be a formative stylistic influence down to the immediate present. Sherman’s legacy, this artistic approach was followed by many artists; to name only a few: Candice Breitz, Sophie Calle, Elke Krystufek, Zoe Leonard, Sarah Lucas,  Zanele Muholi, Pipilotti Rist, Markus Schinwald, Lorna Simpson, Wu Tsang, Gavin Turk, Ryan Trecartin, Gillian Wearing et al. The exhibition in the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien will juxtapose works by Cindy Sherman with those of contemporary artists in order to focus on such themes as deconstruction of the portrait, cultural, gender-specific and sexual stereotypes, also the construction and fiction of identity. Die Ausstellung "The Cindy Sherman Effect. Identität und Transformation in der zeitgenössischen Kunst" im Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien behandelt eine der zentralen Fragestellungen in der Kunst: Die Beschäftigung mit den Themen Identität, deren Konstruktion, Formen der Transformation und Fiktion sind von großer Aktualität angesichts der sich durch die stetig zunehmende Globalisierung immer schneller wandelnden Welt. Gleichzeitig geben neue Technologien, wie Internet, Genmanipulation, oder Klonen, vermehrt Anlass dazu, über den Begriff Identität im Sinn von Subjektgenerierung und -definition nachzudenken. Ausgehend von Cindy Shermans Werk, das zu den Klassikern der inszenierten Fotografie und des künstlerischen Rollenspiels zählt, werden diese relevanten Fragen zum Thema Identität beleuchtet. Shermans fotografische Arbeiten, die sich aus der Performance-Kunst der 1970er-Jahre und dem besonderen Interesse der Künstlerin an sich wandelnden Identitäten entwickelte, kann bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart als stilprägend angesehen werden. In der Nachfolge Shermans sind eine Vielzahl von Künstlerinnen und Künstler diesem künstlerischen Ansatz gefolgt, um nur einige zu nennen: Candice Breitz, Sophie Calle, Elke Krystufek, Zoe Leonard, Sarah Lucas, Zanele Muholi, Pipilotti Rist, Markus Schinwald, Lorna Simpson, Wu Tsang, Gavin Turk, Ryan Trecartin, Gillian Wearing et al. “That’s me – That’s not me” Cindy Sherman at SAMMLUNG VERBUND

sammlung VERBUND shows the widely unknown early works by Cindy Sherman under the title “That’s me – That’s not me” and presents a “catalogue raisonné” compiled by Gabriele Schor in close collaboration with the artist. Early series of photographies, where Sherman already played numerous roles, were cut out by her and put together to complex stories like "Bus Riders" and "Murder Mystery People" or turned into animation films. Until May 16, 2012.

MoMA opens with a Cindy Sherman retrospective on Feb 26, 2012.

Die sammlung VERBUND zeigt frühe Arbeiten (1975-1977) von Cindy Sherman. Schon bevor sie für ihre "Film Stills" berühmt wurde fotografierte sie sich in den unterschiedlichsten Rollen, z.B. in den Cutout Serie "Bus Riders", "Doll Clothes" oder "Murder Mystery". Die ausgeschnittenen Figuren setzte sie zu teilweise komplexen Storyboards zusammen oder verwendete sie für Animationsfilmen. Bis 16. Mai 2012.

Das teilweise unbekannte, verschollene und wenig dokumentierte Frühwerk wurde von der Leiterin der Sammlung Gabriele Schor mit der Künstlerin aufbereitet und in einem umfangreichen Katalog dokumentiert. Ab 26.02.2012 zeigt das MoMA eine umfassende Cindy Sherman Retrospektive.

Reflecting Fashion at mumok

The mumok summer show is all about fashion and/in art. Clothing and fashion has played an important role in art from the beginning of modernism to the present. During the early 20th century, fashion became part of the formal language of the avant-garde including the Surrealists and the Futurists. Since the mid-1960s it has played a major role in Pop Art and the work of artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Cindy Sherman, Niki de Saint Phalle. Curated by Susanne Neuburger. The exhibition will be opened parallel with the "Summer of Fashion" in the MuseumsQuartier. Jun. 15 - Sep. 29, 2012.

Die große Sommerschau im mumok untersucht die Wechselbeziehung von Mode und Kunst seit dem Beginn der Moderne. Im frühen 20. Jahrhundert wird die Mode bei den Futuristen, aber auch im Surrealismus zur Sprache der Avantgarden. Seit Mitte der 1960er-Jahre setzt sich die Pop Art mit Fashion auseinander und für bedeutende KünstlerInnen wie Ellsworth Kelly, Cindy Sherman, Niki de Saint Phalle oder Daniel Buren spielt die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema eine Rolle. Clear the ring for the world of acrobats, clowns, and exotic animals! KUNSTHALLE offers an introduction into the universe of the circus - full of surprises and sensations, poetry and excitement, confusion and unease. The circus has become a projection surface in film, literature and the fine arts. The exhibition assembles international artistic positions that thematize the world of the circus. BEAUTY CONTEST at MUSA

The show "Beauty Contest" is a joint venture of MUSA and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York and was alredy on show in the ACF NY in 2011. This project by austrian and international artist focuses on the human striving for beauty, the omnipresent dictates of beauty and how the individual is still able to maintain his or her freedom. WOMAN FEMINIST AVANTGARDE OF THE 1970s at mumok

With WOMAN FEMINIST AVANTGARDE OF THE 1970s from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND Collection mumok is presenting the emancipation of women artists, who for the first time in the history of art began to create their own new and collective self-determined image of women in an art world dominated by men. The exhibition is divided into four sections: breaking out of one-dimensional role ascriptions as mother, housewife and wife, role-plays, the normativity of beauty, and female sexuality. On show are 300 works of the 1970s by 48 artists from Europe and North and South America. Many of the artists represented here moved away from the male-dominated genre of painting and turned to historically less predetermined media like photography, video, film, and performance.

Mit WOMAN FEMINISTISCHE AVANTGARDE der 1970er-Jahre mit Werken aus der SAMMLUNG VERBUND widmet sich das mumok einem der wichtigsten kunstgeschichtlichen Phänomene der 1970er-Jahre: dem Aufbruch weiblicher Künstlerinnen, die in einer von Männern bestimmten Kunstwelt erstmals in der Geschichte der Kunst kollektiv ein selbstbestimmtes neues Bild der Frau schufen. Die Ausstellung gliedert sich in vier Bereiche: das Aufbrechen eindimensionaler Rollenzuweisungen als Mutter, Haus- und Ehefrau, Rollenspiele, Normativität der Schönheit und weibliche Sexualität. Die Ausstellung zeigt 300 Werke aus den 1970er-Jahren von 48 Künstlerinnen aus Europa, Nord- und Südamerika. Viele der Künstlerinnen lösten sich von der männerdominierten Malerei und wendeten sich historisch „unbelasteten“ Medien wie Fotografie, Video, Film und der Performance zu. Kuratiert von Gabriele Schor (Direktorin, SAMMLUNG VERBUND) mit Eva Badura-Triska. 6. Mai bis 3. September 2017.
