BARBARA MUNGENAST shows new disc shaped canvases at Gabriele Senn Gallery. Christine König Gallery presents "Minimal Compact" - with their works VICKEN PARSO, NATALIA ZALUSKA, ANETTA MONA CHISA und LUCIA TKOCAVA open a discourse about violence and danger, reality and illusion. "Städtebauliche Prosa" is the titel of a show at Kerstin Engholm Gallery withj works by HENDRIK KRAWEN, DOMINIK LOUDA, BILLIE MESKENS und BERND TRASBERGER. At Gallery Andreas Huber RITA SOBRAL CAMPOS shows sculptures and installations inspired by Friedrich II and the medieval culture - "Neon Medieval". Georg Kargl Box is "Remembering RICHARD ARTSCHWAGER", who died Feb 9th, 2013. At Michaela Stock you can see ALEXANDER VISCIO's performances and installations Hardplace Rock, and Occupy A.I.R.

Kreisförmige Leinwände von BARBARA MUNGENAST sind bei Galerie Gabriele Senn zu sehen. Galerie Christine König zeigt "Minimal Compact" - VICKEN PARSO, NATALIA ZALUSKA, ANETTA MONA CHISA und LUCIA TKOCAVA eröffnen mit ihren Arbeiten einen Diskurs über Gewalt, Gefahr Wirklichkeit und Illusion. "Städtebauliche Prosa" ist der Titel der Ausstellung in der Galerie Kerstin Engholm mit Arbeiten von HENDRIK KRAWEN, DOMINIK LOUDA, BILLIE MESKENS und BERND TRASBERGER. In der Galerie Andreas Huber zeigt RITA SOBRAL CAMPOS Skulpturen und Installationen, die von der mittelalterlichen Kulur und der Person Friedrich II inspiriert sind. Dem am 9. Februar verstorbenen RICHARD ARTSCHWAGER gedenkt eine kleine Schau in der Georg Kargl Box. In der Galerie Michaela Stock zeigt ALEXANDER VISCIO die Performances und Installationen Hardplace Rock, and Occupy A.I.R.

Ragnar Kjartansson The Visitors at TBA21

Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary at Augarten shows the newly acquired video composition The Visitors (2012) by Ragnar Kjartansson. A group of musicians gather in the grandiose and decaying twilight zone of Rokeby farm in Upstate New York for a layered portrait of the artist’s friends and an exploration of musical cinema. The nine visitors take up various spaces indoors and out, each one inhabiting a separate yet very distinct setting, playing various instruments and singing as if to themselves the piece’s main tune. It is only in the synchronization of the nine channels that the voices and instruments merge into a harmonic orchestration and together with the life size projections turn it into an overall impression in the gallery. March 8 - June 16, 2013.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary zeigt in der TBA21 im Augarten Ragnar Kjartanssons Videokomposition The Visitors (2012). Eine Gruppe von Musikern und Freunden treffen in der grandios verfallenden Rokeby Farm in Upstate New York zu einem musikalisch-kinematographisches Experiment zusammen. Man sieht die Protagonisten in jeweils separaten Settings den Song in einer langen, ununterbrochenen und sich im Loop wiederholenden 64-minütigen Aufnahme vortragen. Neun lebensgroße Projektionen und die Synchronisation der entsprechenden Kanäle vereint die individuellen Interpretationen zu einer harmonischen Orchestrierung und zu einem räumlichen Gesamtbild im Ausstellungsraum. 08.03 – 16.06.2013.

Hundertwasser at Belvedere

The exhibition "Hundertwasser, Japan and the Avant-garde" at the BELVEDERE documents the adoption of Japanese Art and Far Eastern Philosophy in the Early Work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Even as early as the mid-1950s his art was covered in Japanese art magazines and his breakthrough as an artist was closely linked to his one-year stay in Japan. In the 1950s, the Far East was considered a new sphere of reference for an open-minded approach to art. Paris was the meeting point, where a mutual exchange between Western and Far Eastern avant-garde took place. As many European artists of his time, Hundertwasser interpreted Taoism’s and Zen Buddhism’s lines of thought in a most creative fashion. His early works demonstrate how he reached his own artistic maturity in the late 1950s with his process-oriented manner of painting, experimental pictorial compositions, and painting actionism, thereby moving entirely on the same level as the international avant-garde. Comprising more than 40 works by the artist and numerous works by exponents of the international avant-garde – including Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana, Jean Dubuffet, Tetsumi Kudo, Akira Kito, Yayoi Kusama, etc. – Hundertwasser, Japan and the Avant-garde is the first exhibition to highlight this aspect of the artist’s work in an international context.  March 6th to June 30th, 2013. 


In der Orangerie zeigt das BELVEDERE in der Ausstellung "Hundertwasser, Japan und die Avantgarde", dass Friedensreich Hundertwasser in seinem Frühwerk maßgeblich von der japanischen Kunst und der fernöstlichen Philosophie geprägt wurde. Japan und japanische Philosophie galt in den 50er Jahren als neuer Anhaltspunkt einer offeneren Kunstauffassung und Paris war der Treffpunkt, wo sich die junge westliche und fernöstliche Avantgarde austauschte. Wie viele Künstler seiner Zeit interpretierte Hundertwasser auf kreative Weise Gedanken des Taoismus und des Zen-Buddhismus. Sein Frühwerk zeigt eindrücklich, wie er mit seiner prozessualen Malweise, den experimentellen Bildkompositionen, sowie seinen Malaktionen Ende der 1950er Jahre eine eigene künstlerische Reife erreichte und sich ganz auf der Höhe der internationalen Avantgarde bewegte. Sein mehrmonatiger Japanaufenthalt prägt sein Denken und Werk nachhaltig. Mit über 40 Arbeiten des Künstlers aus internationalen Sammlungen und zahlreichen Werken der internationalen Avantgarde – darunter Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana, Jean Dubuffet, Tetsumi Kudo, Akira Kito, Yayoi Kusama u. a. – rückt die Schau diesen Aspekt von Hundertwassers Schaffen erstmals in einen internationalen Kontext. 05.03.2013 bis 30.06.2013.

Lewis Baltz at ALBERTINA

In the 1970s Lewis Baltz revolutionized fine-art landscape photography with motifs that had previously not been thought worth depicting, such as deserted industrial buildings, suburban housing developments, and devastated peripheries. In formally rigid photographs he has defamiliarized architectural motifs to such an extent that they turn into almost abstract forms and surfaces. This utterly precise language of form demonstrates the influence of Minimal Art on his work, while contenwise Baltz’s mostly black and white photographs can be connected to Conceptual Art and Land Art. Further excellent works by such artists as Robert Smithson, Ed Ruscha, Bernd & Hilla Becher, and Donald Judd will visualize artistic influences that proved to be crucial for Lewis Baltz’s work. Lewis Baltz revolutionierte in den 1970er-Jahren mit bis dato nicht darstellungswürdigen Sujets, wie Industriegebäuden, menschleere Vorstadtsiedlungen und verwüstete Peripherien, die künstlerische Fotografie. In formal strengen meist schwarzweißen Fotos verfremdete er architektonische Motive zu beinahe abstrakten Formen und Flächen. Diese äußerst präzise Formensprache veranschaulicht den Einfluss der Minimal Art auf seine Arbeit. Thematisch finden sich Anspielungen auf weitere Kunstströmungen wie Concept- und Land-Art in Baltz’ Fotos. Ergänzend verdeutlichen Arbeiten von KünstlerInnen wie Robert Smithson, Ed Ruscha, Bernd & Hilla Becher und Donald Judd künstlerische Einflüsse, die sich für Lewis Baltz Werk als essentiell erweisen.
