theartVIEw – Construction_Reflection at mumok

In the exhibition Construction_Reflection, Works from the Collection Gertraud & Dieter Bogner at mumok the collectors Gertraud and Dieter Bogner present a selection of works from their own collection that they donated to mumok in 2007 and that has since been continually expanded. In this exhibition, the interplays between forms and contents, or the politics of form as content, are presented in a number of different interrelated thematic sections: painting and color, the reflection of history and society, and relations between architecture, sculpture, and abstraction in the tradition of a critical modernism. Construction_Reflection presents a collection of installations, paintings, videos, photos, texts, and publications. Curated by Gertraud & Dieter Bogner with Rainer Fuchs. Nov 25, 2016 to April 17, 2017.

Artists: Robert Adrian X, Hartmut Böhm, Heinz Gappmayr, Dan Graham, Thomas Kaminsky, Richard Paul Lohse, Dorit Margreiter, Dóra Maurer, François Morellet, museum in progress, Jorrit Tornquist, Peter Weibel, Heimo Zobernig, and many other artists.Curated by Gertraud & Dieter Bogner with Rainer Fuchs. Francis Alÿs and Avery Singer at SECESSION

At the main hall of the SECESSION Francis Alÿs shows Le temps du sommeil, a series of 111 small paintings created over the course of two decades. They depict miniature scenes and often look like snapshots of simple gestures and activities that, upon closer inspection, appear to be fairly absurd. The pictures illustrate all that he cannot speak of and the titles of the works are not intended as annotations to the images; they enter into a dialogue with them, shining a light on the complex interrelationship between visual and verbal communication. Le temps du sommeil is shown together with the films Paradox of Praxis 1 (Sometimes Making Something Leads to Nothing) (1997) and Paradox of Praxis 5, Ciudad Juárez, México (Sometimes we dream as we live and we live as we dream) (2013), which trace an arc from his early oeuvre to his most recent video work. In the basement the SECESSION presents the work Avery Singer. In Sailor the artist displays a series of new pictures in large formats of projected surfaces, screens within the picture, and shadows that take on a life of their own or sprawl over the bodies and objects like nets. The resulting novel pictorial spaces are characterized by an irritating interplay between the illusionistic depth of the painted volumes, the various planes of which the pictures are composed, and the flatness of the meticulously finished surfaces. Singer employs a computer-controlled large-scale industrial airbrush printer, which not only allows her to generate details and surfaces that could not be manufactured by hand, it also lets her confront painting with its own history by dismantling the ostensible opposition between the digital world and painting.

Im Grafischen Kabinett werden zwei seiner Filme Paradox of Praxis 1 (Sometimes Making Something Leads to Nothing),1997 und Paradox of Praxis 5, Ciudad Juárez, México (Sometimes we dream as we live and we live as we dream), 2013 gezeigt. 18.11.2016 – 22.01.2017.
