Sheila Hicks at the MAK

Sheila Hicks (* 1934) has developed for her exhibition at the MAK extensive sculptures and new works and also includes an inspirational object from the MAK Textiles and Carpets Collection. The textiles and installations of the American artist, who has been living in Paris since the mid-1960s, elude traditional ideas of textile art and techniques of knotting and weaving. In the development and perception of the objects, the sculptural, the tactile, fine color nuances up to vibrating luminosity, and nature play an essential role as the starting point and poetry of the textile. 09.12.2020 –18.04.2021.

Sheila Hicks (* 1934) entwickelte für ihre Personale im MAK raumgreifende Skulpturen sowie neue Werke und bezieht ein inspiratives Objekt  der MAK-Sammlung Textilien und Teppiche ein. Die Gewebe und Installationen der seit Mitte der 1960er Jahre in Paris lebenden amerikanischen Künstlerin entziehen sich traditionellen Vorstellungen von Textilkunst und Techniken des Knüpfens und Webens. In der Entwicklung und Wahrnehmung ihrer Objekte spielen das Skulpturale, das Taktile, feine Farbnuancen bis hin zu vibrierender Leuchtkraft sowie die Natur als Ausgangspunkt und Poesie des Textilen eine wesentliche Rolle. 09.12.2020 – 18.04.2021.

Želimir Žilnik "Shadow Citizens" at Kunsthalle Wien

The exhibition Shadow Citizens at the Kunsthalle Vienna offers an insight into the radical film praxis and extensive œuvre of filmmaker Želimir Žilnik (b. 1942, lives and works in Novi Sad, Serbia) within an exhibition context. From his beginnings in the lively amateur film scene of Yugoslavia in the 1960s, Žilnik has gone on to make more than fifty films, including a number of feature films and TV productions, often in the genre of docudrama. He received international recognition early on, winning the Golden Bear for the Best Film at the 1969 Berlin International Film Festival for Early Works. Many of Žilnik’s films have prophetically anticipated real-world events such as the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the economic transition from socialism to a neoliberal order, the elimination of workers’ rights, and the wider social erosion related to labor and migration. The exhibition’s title, Shadow Citizens, reflects Žilnik’s lifelong focus on invisible, suppressed, and under- and misrepresented members of society.

Die Ausstellung Shadow Citizens in der Kunsthalle Wien gibt mit einer Auswahl von Želimir Žilniks ikonischen Kurzfilme aus den Anfangsjahren seiner Karriere, Spielfilmen, Filmausschnitten und dokumentarischem Material Einblick in sein gesamtes Œuvre und dessen kritische und öffentliche Rezeption im Laufe der Jahre. Seit seinen Anfängen in der lebendigen Amateurfilmszene, die sich in den 1960ern in Jugoslawien entwickelte, hat Žilnik über 50 Filme gedreht, darunter zahlreiche Spielfilme und Fernsehproduktionen, die oft der Gattung Dokumentardrama zuzurechnen sind. Seine Arbeiten fanden schnell internationale Anerkennung; für Frühe Werke gewann er 1969 auf der Berlinale den Goldenen Bären für den besten Langfilm. Viele von Žilniks Filmen nahmen auf geradezu prophetische Weise reale Entwicklungen vorweg, etwa den Zerfall Jugoslawiens, den wirtschaftlichen Übergang vom Sozialismus zu einer neoliberalen Ordnung, die Beseitigung von Arbeitnehmerrechten und die umfassende Zersetzung gesellschaftlicher Strukturen in den Bereichen Arbeit und Migration. Der Titel der Ausstellung, Shadow Citizens, spiegelt Žilniks jahrzehntelanges Bemühen wider, die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuschauer*innen auf unsichtbare, unterdrückte, unterrepräsentierte und verzerrt dargestellte Mitglieder der Gesellschaft zu lenken.

Gerhard Richter: Landscape at Kunstforum Vienna

Gerhard Richter (* 1932 in Dresden), noted internationally as the most important living painter, shows a comprehensive retrospective of his landscapes in the Kunstforum Vienna. Besides numerous oil paintings, the exhibition presents drawings, printed graphics, photography, artists’ books and objects that reflect the theme of “landscape” from the 1960s until today. It will include famous main works as well as those that were seldom or never previously shown to the public. The show will have around a hundred and fifty works on display and is being organised with the generous help of Gerhard Richter and in cooperation with the Kunsthaus Zurich. Curators: Hubertus Butin (Berlin) and Lisa Ortner-Kreil. 1.10.2020 – 14.02.2021.

Gerhard Richter (geb. 1932 in Dresden), der international als der bedeutendste lebende Maler gilt, zeigt im Kunstforum Wien eine umfangreiche Retrospektive seiner Landschaftsbilder. Neben zahlreichen Ölgemälden werden auch Zeichnungen, Druckgrafiken, Fotoarbeiten, Künstlerbücher und Objekte ausgestellt, die das Thema „Landschaft“ von den 1960er-Jahren bis heute reflektieren. Dabei werden sowohl bekannte Hauptwerke, als auch Arbeiten präsentiert, die selten oder noch nie öffentlich zu sehen waren. Die Schau wird an die 150 Arbeiten umfassen und mit großzügiger Hilfe von Gerhard Richter sowie in Kooperation mit dem Kunsthaus Zürich realisiert. ANDY WARHOL EXHIBITS a glittering alternative at mumok presents rarely shown works that look behind the facade of the world-famous Pop Art icon to rediscover Warhol’s capabilities as a groundbreaking exhibition and installation artist. For the first time ever, viewers will be given an exemplary overview of the artist’s exhibition practice without letting his early and late works fall by the wayside. This cross-section places equal value on the myriad media Warhol used and shows that his modes of presentation should be understood as an essential part of his oeuvre. Curated by Marianne Dobner. Erstmals wird ein exemplarischer Überblick über die Ausstellungspraxis des Künstlers geboten, ohne dabei dessen Früh- und Spätwerk außer Acht zu lassen. Der Querschnitt erlaubt eine gleichwertige Betrachtung der vielfältigen, von ihm eingesetzten Medien und zeigt, dass Warhols Präsentationsmodi als wesentliche Bestandteile seines Werkes zu verstehen sind.
